Someone mention Oban?
Can't find anything better then the Distiller's Edition at that price range...
It really is something excellent. I had a 1991 bottling of it a few years ago.

Something else, it really is.

The distillery itself is good too. Been twice. @Morag had a cask strentgh one while there (I drove).

One to put on the to do list shall I venture to watch Everton.

Just love the Distiller's Edition as my go to bottle for special occasions.

If it's peaty malts you like then with the old favourites from Islay you won't go far wrong and as has been said Lagavulin 16 is the peatiest of them , with Laphroig 10 good value too. There are some good ones in other regions too, though not so well recognised. About 18 months ago about 40 miles from home I got diverted off the main road , missed the diversion back and poddled along a pleasant B road for about 5 miles which took me past the Ardmore distillery. I'd seen the whisky on sale but never knew where it was. Anyway , next time I saw it , I looked more closely and bought a bottle. It was written as "peated" on the bottle and turned out to be quite a nice peated malt if you like something at the lower end of the peated scale. I guess it would be classified as a "Speyside " malt as its on the Eastern edge of Speyside, worth trying if you want something different from your peated malt.

Ardbeg 10 and Laphroaig 10 are both peatier than Lagavulin 16, which isn't to say that Lagavulin 16 isn't a peat monster.

Great thread, I am fond of malt whisky myself since I came up to Scotland and was introduced to it many years ago,I love Laphroaig so thinking it was a good thing to do I bought my old man a bottle one Christmas, next time I visited him he handed me it back minus a nip, said it tasted like bad medicine.........obviously not to everyone's taste.
If any of you guys ever visit Glasgow don't miss a visit to a great pub called the Pot Still in the city centre a 'must see' for whisky lovers.

Hello lad.

Well everybody's taste is different so we'll have to agree to disagree on that. All three are the classics of Islay malts, my mate is so so boring and will drink nothing but Laphroig , and misses out on so many others . I'd probably go for Ardbeg of the three if forced to chose on a night out, but for me Lagavulin 16 just blows everything out of the water in terms of being peatiest , to the extent that it sits at the back of my whisky cabinet untouched for months as its too peaty for me, but great to try out on visitors .

Yeah, Ardbeg for me, too, but I've got all three in my cupboard. Love the peaty stuff.

Testing out a claim made by a local - Denver's Pint's Pub claims to have the "World's Largest Selection of Single Malt Whisky" - thoughts? I do think it's quite the nice list.

The whisky courses they offer are fun to inflict upon friends who would normally order a Cosmo.

Re the peat scale, definitely the Laphroaig 10 over the Lagavulin 16 for me. Laphroaig 10 is like drinking a camp fire - which is marvelous in the right time and place.
