I remember Asda used to do their own label Islay whiskey for about 2/3 the price of a brand label,as their are so few distilleries on the Island it would have had to be one of the brand ones it originated from, haven't seen them for some time, does anyone know if they've stopped selling them?

There are loads of distilleries on Islay. 11 active ones and a couple or more mothballed. It was probably made up of the output of one or more of them that didn't make the grade for their "branded" whisky but was still decent enough, or just one if it was sold as a single malt. And probably very good value for the money!

Mate of mine wants a bottle, and I always get a bottle of scotch for my dad when I go back home - I usually get him Bunnahabhain 12 though, so might default back to that...
Stick with the Bunnahabhain. One of the best and one I almost always have in the cupboard

They usually pretty much give Glenmorangie 10 away in the run up to Xmas, 25 quid a bottle or less if you're lucky.

Just finished a bottle of Ardbeg Uigeadail tonight. Am looking for something to replace it in the £50-60 range. Any recommendations, whisky crew?

Try this offering from Bruichladdich

Amazon product ASIN B00JZXJBEY
I was going to suggest the Bruichladdich PC 12 but it's a bit more expensive

Had a glass of Oban 14 yesterday on a cold Spring evening down here. Very nice indeed. Oban is for me :)

another sacriligious post in here haha

What is the business with this Jack daniels single rye malt coming out? What does that taste like? Why Rye?

Because whisky can be made from grains other than malted barley, e.g. maize, rye, wheat.

Most blended whisky is made up of a mixture of grain whisky and malt (barley) whisky. Grain whisky is cheaper to produce. The malt adds flavour and complexity.

Grain whisky is currently receiving some "hipster" interest.

JD, for instance, is made up of a blend of corn, rye and barley whiskey.
