Sir Landon Of Donovan

I love LD, but household name in the US?? That's really stretching it.

the US players at clubs in Europe are all the time talking about how great it is to come back to the States and walk around in public completely anonymous. LD has said he's rarely recognized in LA outside soccer venues.

Closest thing to a soccer player household name in the US is Beckham

You are partly making my point, us players, shoot, even english stars (lampard) can walk the streets here without being recognized. Beckham is one of the few exceptions, and even for him it is manageable. When it comes to the average American household, I bet Donovan is a more recognizable name than even messi or Rooney. Maybe even Ronaldo. In fact, I'd say he is second to Beckham.

Whe it comes to being recognizable by face, I bet if you show the average American house pictures of all people mentioned in this post, and most would only be able to identify donovan and Beckham...

So yes, while hs isn't the celebrity that Beck's is, I think Landon is the second most famous soccer player in The mind of the average American. A few good seasons with them and everton would go from being unheard over here to equal weight with all teams but say Manu.

Isn't Thierry Henry bigger than Donovan in the US? that's beside the point anyway, Donovan on the right and Pienaar on the left from the start of the season will make me believe in the possibility of being in the mix for 4th position.

And those pictures are hysterical, but prove that we are both basically saying the same thing. The biggest of stars like Totti are not going to be recognized (apparently even when wearing their club logos!) Bradley is a rising star but many soccer fans wouldn't even recognize him.

My point is that Beckham and Donovan, even without being in uniform, are likely to be the only "soccer" players in the to be recognized often in the streets, subway, Starbucks. In that sense, they, unlike Totti are bigger celebrities in the US.

I do remember after the world cup their was a boom in his popularity stateside, I remember seeing celbrities tweeting pictures of themselves saying hears me with THE Landon Donovan and I know Nike have a huge sponsorship deal with him as do Gatorade, so his popularity must be quite high for big companies to invest that much into his 'brand' if that's what you would like to call it.

LD absolutely best known US player and possibly only second to Beckham as you say, still does not make him a household name in the US. Soccer popularity is on the rise, but not that level, yet. Merseyside on the other hand.....

... Regardless, he's ace and should be at Everton

Pienaar and Landon would be ace. Much as I would love to see Dempsey as a blue, he is looking for a big payday to capitalize on his top 5 goal scoring last season. We are not the team to provide that payday, obviously. Safe prediction Donovan becomes a permanent blue in the winter transfer for a couple million with help from Nike, Gatorade etc. He's just biding his time with Galaxy trying to finish strong.

Not too bad they avg about 17k a game in 2011. This year I know they are up.

LD is boss with Everton we need to get him here.

Haven't that Portland side sold-out everyone of their games? Looks like a fairly decent atmosphere too.
