Sir Landon Of Donovan

I've said it once and I'll say it again, if you don't like what's being said in this thread, then STAY OUT OF IT.

We've already had one member banned for seven days because they felt the need to wander in and tell us to close it.

Anyone else need a seven day vacation from GOT because I'd be happy to oblige.

My advice, stay out of the thread if you don't have anything constructive to say on the subject.

I'm going to stay out of it now, because for me it's just one more lost opoortunity to add to the list, which pees me off. Would have benefited the squad/team and put USA spotlight on the club, but who needs commercial opportunities when we have Kenwright & Elstone ?

You do realize though that it's not always just up to the buyer/loaner going in for a player?

It would have been a great signing for us and Landon as he seems to get us, and have a genuine affection towards the club, but if the MLS want to price us out of a move it's not really that hard with the financial state we have been in for much of our recent history. If we'd have spent more than 4-5 mil on Landon I'd have been livid, much like I was when the club signed Distin for in excess of 4 mil. We just can't afford it, simple as.

Hold on, are you saying, knowing what you know now, that Distin was not worth the money he was signed for?

Not Moyes' shrewdest buy (cahill, lescott, coleman, etc), but (in hindsight) it was a fantastic one. admittedly, he has held up better and retained his speed longer than most expected.

Who is to say that Landon wouldn't last long like Distin has? Sadly, it won't be until this time NEXT year that I will finally admit that he truly isn't coming (and at that time it would be on a free). Certainly looks like it isn't going to happen now.

My thoughts exactly. Will have had 4 years great service out of him by the end of the season and even if he retires after the next one that will be 5 years for £4m. Not bad at all.

He will come when this current contract expires. U just don't know what the reasons are for nothing happening now. There could be several reasons, from LA to Everton.

Maybe LA were insistent on keeping him till they can replace him properly in the summer.
Maybe there valuation was to much at this time.
Maybe Landon didn't want to move at this point and he generally wanted a rest.
Maybe moyes didn't want to spend money on a player who would of needed a Pre season before getting up to speed with us.

Several reason's there could be. But I still think he will be back its just when. Either way, he'll be a good addition to the squad if and when he comes.

I'm saying 4-5 m for a defender well into his 30's didn't make a shred of sense, but we were short on options and had the Lescott-money burning holes in our pockets. He's been by far the best of the 3 ins we had, so in hindsight we got our money's worth from him.

There's a difference now though as from what's rumoured we had 3 m to spend and then only installments to go from there. Where do you see us in the next 3-4 transfer windows if we had spent that on Donovan?

There's a pretty obvious sell-to-buy policy in this club, in it's current financial situation (whether this is right or wrong is an entirely different debate), so we do need to look at resale-value when we buy. Simple as.

ye but no resale value.

people say we did brilliantly with 22m for lescott and we did but how did we spend it.

5m for distin will leave on a free, 6.2m for heitinga and he will also probably run his contract down and sign a pre contract next january. and bilyletidnov bought for 9m sold for 5m.

from 20.2m we are likely to get 5m back, considering we create our own transfer funds by selling players its not great business.

landon donavon would be a decent squad player on a free a few seasons ago not now. robbie keane has been killing it over there and also had a short loan at villa and did well, but you wouldnt want to sign him would you. same with donavon its a massive risk to say he can do it for a season let alone any longer then that
