It's quite likely that Everton will play the Galaxy in the upcoming preseason tourney. We'll see how much of a quality gap there is then. Sure it's preseason, but some here talk like MLS is far below the Finnish Veikkausliiga. Take this for example. At the last World Cup when the US played England, the US fielded 9 players either in MLS or with MLS roots. 4 were still in MLS with Holden just having moved to Bolton and the rest had started their careers there. England played with strictly premier league players. The final score was 1-1. Why did England not dismantle the US who were fielding players many of you claim play in an amateur league?

MLS is far behind the likes of Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, and the Bundesliga. It's not even close. However, the league isn't as bad as many of you say, and it produces some real quality from time to time.

MLS is pretty much on par at this point with the second tier leagues such as Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, etc.... Those knocking MLS have either:

A) Watched only a handful of matches and chosen to use a small sample size to draw conclusions about the overall quality of the league or:

B) Haven't watched it at all and heard from a mate of theirs that it's "****e" and that isn't even League Two standard.

Either way, both options are dead wrong. Take it from someone who watches:

A) 95% of all Everton matches each season (soon to be 100% due to new NBC deal) and quite a few non-Everton Premier League matches and:

B) 40-60 MLS matches a year (30 of which are my Houston Dynamo)

I'll tell you the truth. The rest are just pretenders.

I watch a wee bit of MLS because it's on ESPN a lot over here, and what I've seen, the fitness levels are defo on a par with the EPL, the speed of the game isn't far off either, the problem is the skill level, they're so fit and energetic because of the excellence of the USA's fitness programs that the technical side of the game can't keep up.

It's like they try stuff they're not quite capable of yet. Beckham played wonderfully for LA Galaxy over there because he had so many willing runners to get onto his balls (I'm sure there's a joke there).

Agree with that Bill? They are nearly there, just lacking a bit of technique.

MLS is great attendance wise and it's growing stature and the players are good athletes but my god the technical skills are atrocious and worst than the A league in that sense

As a fellow American I agree with you.

People come up to me making fun of how bad it is but I always end up letting them know it isn't that bad.
Some need to get that mentality out of their heads and go watch the game

No, I watch plenty, and I'm saying straight up that the skill level simply isn't there. The players are super fit, and go all out at it at 200%, but they can't put 5 passes together. It's entertaining for sure, but it's not constructive.

Spot on. The players are athletes but not football players if that makes sense. Very few technically good players with obvious exceptions to the Donovans and Zusis. I find that most of the star players (ie the flair players) for most teams tend to be foreigners.

I would put the MLS teams on par with a bottom table championship team, not the greatest football can offer but certainly entertaining.

Ship has sailed.
Love Donz but no thanx. Stay in the sun son.

Absolutely nothing supports those comments.

He's soon to be available for free, not's let forget in a WC year.
He's still quality
If he wants a move he likes it here
We need more right sides players, even if only for a couple of years.
He can play in a number of roles.

But hey, the ship has sailed, we have the mighty Naismith and Guaye now!

He's not coming back mate.

Cahill, legend that he is was it's fair to say starting to struggle over here, yet he seems to be quite refreshed in NY, why's that do you think ?

Tim Cahill has not been "refreshed" in NY. If we're honest, he's been poor. Not even average. For his DP salary, he has been poor. I wouldn't use him as an example of the league's quality. Lately he has perked up, but he has a long road to climb to be worth his DP status. Calling a spade a spade.

I wish this thread would just go to World Football so it wouldn't have spiteful people in it. ArtetaFan, kudos to some excellent posts.

LD was ambitious for staying in MLS. Disagree with EFCNY on that one. It's precisely due to comments like EFCNY's why I think staying took more guts. He has done a crap ton for the league, including leading player negotiations during a strike. That's not someone who's a homebody just looking to fritter the time away.

LD's not coming back. Time to move on. I can't wait to see him in the 2014 World Cup. Likely his swan song for his national team. Hopefully 4 World Cups, 4 federation titles, most world cup goals for CONCACAF, 56 goals and 56 assists for his national team and counting - that's 112 goals and assists in 151 games. The amount of players who can say that are tiny - don't care where you're from.

Good god no. A friendly is not the time to judge this. By the end of the game LA will have their third string on. Starting XI to starting XI is a very different story. Everton should be winning this game if we play one another.

Fantastic post mate.

The premier league is up there as one of the best leagues in the world and Baines most certainly plays against some of the best being in the premiership. The MLS is nowhere close.

MLS is Championship Level football. There are teams in the bottom of the EPL table (QPR from last year) that would be given a run for their money by some MLS sides. Not all of the EPL is amazing. The bottom fodder is bottom fodder.

The top of the EPL table (including us) is another class.
