Sleep (how many hours do you need ? )

In my early twenties I could sleep all night and even an alarm would struggle to wake me up. Weekends I could easily sleep in until 11-12

Now I’m awake most mornings before my 5.50 alarm, usually after waking up for a drink or a piss at some point and fighting to get back asleep. I aim for 6-7 hours, but probably lucky if I get 4-5.

Weekends I’m lucky if I lie in past 7am no matter what time I go to bed.

This study gives some insight into what sleep is really about.

There is this extremely rare genetic condition, fatal familial insomnia, that onsets around age 40-50 where you can't sleep. You die within a few months to a few years of the symptom onset. Sleep is like adding fresh oil and cleaning an engine...if you don't do this it dies.

I get about 6 hours of actual sleep on an average night.

The amount of time I spend in bed is a lot longer though, it could be as much as 9-10 hours.

I'm awake no later than 6am every day and if I'm off work or it's the weekend, I'll get up at that time, but most nights I'll be in bed by 9pm. Other mornings I'll wake and head straight to the gym.

I don't focus on the quality of sleep really, I enjoy listening to the radio or a podcast in bed and just the general comfort and sense of peace. Oftentimes I'll come to a decision about something whilst lying in bed, or feel settled about something that was bothering me.

First time I've ever heard that.
