Sligo Rovers v Everton, Friday 19th July, 4pm

Considering we haven't won an August league game since Benitez was manager, I just could not disagree more with the opinion that pre season matches don't matter.

Our pre seasons are not taken seriously enough and we never have a team ready to start a league season.
Pre season matches matter in terms of gaining sharpness and fitness. They do not matter in terms of results. They'll have been ran into the ground so won't have been training with preparation for this match in and of itself. It's just another training session.

Especially so the first one where it's a mish mash of players with a few yet to come back after international duty.

How we play in them does matter. The results matter too, but at least we want to see the team playing well. We haven't seen that in previous season for a number of years.

End of the day the hard truth is we're not entitled to win because we're Premier League and another side is lower or a smaller club. Still remember that Boreham Wood game and how much we made a meal of that. Doncaster last year, same again. Even Wigan gave us a performance last year pre-season. Everton players need to put some respect on smaller clubs that turn up for pre-season and turn up themselves. And put some respect on the fans spending their money to go or stream. Wasn't a great starting 11 today but the likes of Keane, Maupay, Virginia and the kids are not likely to be starting any Prem/cup game this season, or at least not all at once like that. The big pre-season test will be Roma and as the last European game in Goodison I'd expect a full strength team for that. In summary I'm cheesed off but still hopeful.

What kind of performance are you expecting in a first pre-season match, right on the back of a preseason fitness camp, with multiple substitutions and a notable number of first teamers not present? There's nothing there about finesse and ultimate performance - it's just the first few steps in getting back into a rhythm and developing match fitness.

You get absolutely nothing in terms of reward from the result so the result quite clearly does not matter. It's like saying the Florida Cup was a vital exercise in breeding a winning mentality.

Would you be happier if they were putting 23 past an Austrian amateur side?

We need to be taking the 3 points home.

This was a glorified training session, in fact it seems like a warm down after a difficult day yesterday.

Nothing can be read into the first couple of pre season friendlies.

It is only as we get close to the seasons start that you start to judge performances.

The main question to be asked about this is if any academy lads did enough to keep themselves in the squad for the rest of the pre season.

I mean we are going to be crap next season regardless of how pre season looks tbh. Will be turgid long ball, low block football relying on set pieces to scrape the points to stay in the division. Sorry to break that to anyone.
Bleak though times are, I’m hoping the apparent trend for more expansive footballers means we may be a bit more fluid than that
