Thanks for that guys.Hey mate.
Working as a pvt practice physio here doing my masters in NZ.
The best thing your wife can do is get gently moving in a pool even if it is just small amounts of walking. Generally discs are better with repeated extension movements, so doing some McKenzie Press ups in small and tolerable amounts is also worth trying.
Lots of heat and topical anti-inflams, medication is a tricky one but often if there is some sciatic type pain, trialling some amitrip, nortriptyline or gabapentin in the right dosage can be helpful to reduce some of the radicular pain and help with sleep. Seeing a physiotherapist or chiropractor for some manual therapy should also be helpful re settling her pain, accupuncture does help some people as well but others find it not helpful at all.
I have done a lot of acupuncture along with cupping and my experience with it has not been anything like a placebo effect or Woo-woo (@LostLegend i had to look for what you meant and I wonder if you have ever have these treatments because I can tell you that the results are real and can make a great difference improving someone’s pain)She is supposed to be going for this therapy called cupping on the Monday as I have just found out. Has anyone heard of this.
Only go to any back expert if they are recommended - I did 3rd time lucky, the first two were rubbish ....I have done a lot of acupuncture along with cupping and my experience with it has not been anything like a placebo effect or Woo-woo (@LostLegend i had to look for what you meant and I wonder if you have ever have these treatments because I can tell you that the results are real and can make a great difference improving someone’s pain)
Many years ago when I was still nursing my daughter I suffered a very painful disc and nerve injury that was very debilitating and left me in agonizing pain (this type of injury is very common among nursing mothers). I went to my doctor and was prescribed pain killers and physical therapy but the pain persisted and was making my life miserable. I continued searching for a way to improve and get better so I went to a chiropractor and such treatments helped me a lot but what got me completely out of that painful condition was acupuncture along with cupping. My experience with these treatments have always been very good. Acupuncture can be a very effective treatment at providing relief of severe pain symptoms of a slipped disc by reducing inflammation and by helping healing nerve damage. Cupping feels like a deep tissue massage so it helps loosen tight muscles and relieves pain in the back too. After having treatments twice a week for a month I finally began feeling much better and within a couple of months I was completely healed. So my suggestion is for your wife to pursue this sort of treatment, there is no harm that she will get from it and if anything it may actually healed her like it happened to me. What no regular doctor or pain killer were able to healed, acupuncture and cupping did.
I agree. Going to someone that’s highly recommended and has a lot of expertise is crucial. Im fortunate that the acupuncture clinic that I go to has very knowledgeable practitioners.Only go to a ny back expert if they are recommended - I did 3rd time lucky, the first two were rubbish ....
Thanks very much for that Sass that's been really helpful. You are very welcome, Jondel. I hope she finds some relief soon. Such condition can be very debilitating for her, and you too. I would also suggest for her to try to continue moving and staying active, the pain will probably prevent her from doing much but staying still for too long can actually worsen her condition too. Thanks very much for that Sass that's been really helpful. I'll tell her what you've said
Thanks for your advice Sass it's much appreciated. In fact the number of people giving me advice on Got has been fantastic. But I shouldn't be surprised really the majority of people on here would do anyone a good turn. Thanks to all of you.You are very welcome, Jondel. I hope she finds some relief soon. Really feel for you mate, just hope you can get a treatment that will work or even just take the pain away for a while. I have a L3/L4 herniation and at times it is totally soul destroying. Fingers crossed for you mate that in time you will get a better way of life.I really hope your wife gets better. My back went 2 and a half years ago, and I've been in abject pain every day ever since. I can barely sit down these days, and it's totally ruining my life. I've spent thousands on almost every option that you can think of. The MRI's show herniation at L4/L5 but the really crap thing about MRI's is the images are always of you lying down, and not sitting on a chair etc, and lying down is about the only thing that I can do these days.
I take a minimum of 300mg of tramadol every day but it does little, I can go over 400mg on some days but it certainly does not eradicate the pain. Diazepam PRN. I wake up in withdrawal every morning. I finally had to quit my job about a month ago, it would have had to happen a lot earlier had it not been for the 'working from home'. I have become suicidal. I'm very, very, miserable these days. I'm only 37, and currently on the dole right now as I can no longer do a job that I used to love doing. The future looks bleak. Pain every day, being unable to socialise properly.
I have an appointment in Harley Street on Monday. Paying through the nose to someone that reckons botox might help with back spasms etc. I'm not holding my breath.
Hopefully you get some relief soon, and a long term plan that doesn't involve drugging yourself up to the eyes every day.I really hope your wife gets better.
