Small Squad

Ive been thinking alot about the size of our squad and whether it really is going to be a bad thing for the coming season. Reports today suggest we may be in for Baines- a tidy left back who has a very good engine- with a back four that could consist of any of these players:

Hibbert/Neville/Jagielka/Yobo/Lescott/Stubbs/Valente/Baines/Boyle To me any four of those would be a very decent defensive quartet.

The midfield could be a mixture of any of the following:

VDM/Arteta/Da Silva/Cahill/Carsley/Pienaar/Osman/Vidarrson. Now again I think with the addition of one more quality midfielder and the fact that both Jagielka and Neville can both play there as well we have the makings of a decent midfield.

The front line has without a doubt got goals in it:
AJ/Beats/Vaughan/Jutkiewicz/Anichebe/Mcfadden

So my point is that although we do have a small squad ther starting 11 and fringe players definitely have a lot to offer. Chelsea operate with a fairly small squad and thats the way Mourinho likes it.

I think a smaller squad forges better team spirit and although we dont want to be so light that we are struggling for numbers I personally believe that with the possible addition of Baines and another midfielder/winger we could well have a squad that is strong team spirited and adaptable. The futures looking good but we still need two more players. Lets hope Baines is one of them.

We'd still need about 4 players to have the same size squad as chelsea, and even then, their playes are different class and their squad players could walk into most other teams starting 11. Without a shadow of a doubt, our squad size is low and its only due to finance that its not bigger.

It look ok with everyone fit, but can you honestly say we have a decent team if we got injuries to Arteta, AJ and Cahill?

I believe we need another midfielder that would compensate for Arteta, but we did ok with Cahill out for a lot of last season and I think Vaughan at peak condition could fill AJ's boots.

Yeah but we had Fernandez to compensate for Cahills loss, and now Vaughan is injured, suddenly none of the other strikers seem good enough.

How many games did Fernandes actually play? Like i said I think we need another midfielder and Baines- if we get that i will be happy.

the squad is too small to seriously take on europe aswell. vaughan already out for 4 months before a ball is kicked in anger. aj was not ever present last season and cahill seemed to bounce from one injury to another.

baines for 6 million? don't think moyes will pay that.

I don,t reckon we need another left back if we have cash to spend please another quality midfielder or winger someone quick and skilfull and a back up keeper

theres only really been two - and there was an offside in the blackburn incident.

he did well at wednesday - he needs to shake the the past off and get a couple of senior games in to banish the problems he has had. carling cup should do, or whatever its called now.

I'm only going on the facts. We have the smallest squad in the premiership, good enough to do well in the league only, but probably too light to compete effectively in europe, permiership, fa and league cups.
