Who gave you this job? And how did the overlook the other slightly older staff already part of the team?

Something amiss here.

Say things like, "going forward" "game changer" "synergy" "all hands on deck" "if anyone wants a pay increase you have to give me head" "we'll revisit this" "stake holders" "the big picture" "work life balance".. get the management buzzwords right and you can blag your way through it.

…just be yourself and treat them with respect. I got to quite a senior level in public sector, I always felt folk didn’t work for me but worked with me. The reality is, the higher you get your only as good as the people you manage.

I think this is the crux of it. Nobody ever worked in the public sector to get rich, but out of a desire to serve the public.

Aye, this is what my previous manager did prior to his retirement. He never deemed anything beneath him. Great bloke.

The only issue is you can get a bit close to David Brent at times, but if you see the funny side of that it's fine really

And no, that's not a sexual position and yeah, I can't quite understand how either but I've got to manage a load of people who are at least 1.5 times my age.

I work in the public sector, they're thoroughly decent people so I doubt they'll be voting Tory, so no need to put them all on immediate performance reviews.

What's the best way to prepare myself for this experience, any books or YouTube videos people recommend on leadership?
It was at this point I knew this was going to be a difficult process for you, and a living nightmare for the unfortunate staff assigned to you.

…not sure about that

You want decent pay, security and a nice pension. The Public Sector looked after my working life and my retirement but I like to think I gave as good as I got. Wouldn’t change a thing.
Unfortunately the decent pension is a thing of the past now eggs. I mean it's obviously not the worst pension in the world, but nothing like it used to be.

We'd 💯 make more bank in the private sector though
