So I've been promoted to a management position

And ingot this style from my dad who was in the RAF in the 90's and talks to people absolutely terribly and I just want to do the opposite for people

But, you also have to be able to delegate and not micromanage, as that can breed resentment - it doesn't build trust or allow development, while limiting you.

If someone is better than you at something, do not be afraid to give them that responsibility, but that sometimes means giving the glamorous stuff, not just the dross.

It is finding the balance.
I tell my team, we’re all the same, except I have my jobs to do and they have theirs, but I’m the one who signs their timesheets for wages 😂😂 and part of my job is ensuring they have everything they need to do their job, training, knowledge and support.

Also, always walk around with a bunch of papers or a file under your arm, they’ll all think you’re busy all the time
Add to that, don't reply to your e-mails all at once. Space them out throughout the day to create the illusion that you're sitting at your desk the whole time. ;)

And don’t always take phone calls straight away, ask can you call them back as you’re in the middle of something important
Lol, and another one... If your company uses an app like 'Team Microsoft' to do virtual meetings, which is linked to your e-mail.

And if they always check to see if you're online... There are little apps that you can leave on running in the background which moves the mouse pointer every 2 - 5 minutes, so your status never switches to 'Away'.

I don't know if we're helping @Paris here... Giving him pointers on how to be an office slacker! 😂 😂 😂

And no, that's not a sexual position and yeah, I can't quite understand how either but I've got to manage a load of people who are at least 1.5 times my age.

I work in the public sector, they're thoroughly decent people so I doubt they'll be voting Tory, so no need to put them all on immediate performance reviews.

What's the best way to prepare myself for this experience, any books or YouTube videos people recommend on leadership?

Congratulations on the promotion.

Carol Ancelotti's book "Quiet Leadership" is a good read, he explains the concept of managing upwards and downwards well. I had a secondment in a management position with a previous employer and it's strange to make that step when you've been one of the lads for a long time. The best advice I could give is make sure you know everyone's appreciated - whether it be a manager above who helps you find your feet in your new role, or the staff you're responsible for who go about their work well. No matter what your position is we're all cogs and without all the cogs working properly the business would grind to a halt.

Really easy answer to this. If the money kept coming in every month without needing to work then you and they wouldn’t be there.

Talk to them, find common ground and be kind as this is just work. They like you focus on their family and friends. Work must be done and encourage them while they do it.

Treat them as you would want to be managed and they will do their best for you.

Treat them how you would like to be treated by a Manager.
