So I've been promoted to a management position

If this is a career move (long term) it might be worth considering some further education. The CMI have some bespoke modules that may be of interest and if you can get your employer to pay, an MBA is a useful.process. Such things won't just point you in the right direction, they'll get you "future-ready" for market developments.
Mba lol. Sorry, there's a couple of more senior folk at work with them and they are just odd/terrible.

Might just be my experience colouring things.

But if interested @Paris there's the national apprenticeship levy scheme which offers level 7 qualifications aimed at senior leadership, including an mba. Cost to you - nothing. Employer is supposed to make time for your study. Think it is restricted to larger organisations who pay into it.

I am weighing up an MBA through it, but I'm not sure I could live with myself. They really do seem to turn into utter unthinking overconfident knobs.

MBAs are a recognised benchmark for a reason.

People can be idiots.

if you get the opportunity, do it would be my advise, mate. Just don't let your knew knowledge, skills and understanding turn you into a knob! :)

There are some great degree apprenticeships and dual awarded too with professional bodies so, yes, that's worth a look too.

You've got one haven't you?

This explains much.

One of the hardest things I found about having management responsibility when I had it was balancing the personal agendas of the people you manage with what is good for the team, especially when some people's agendas might be that they want your job and see you as competition
People are the best and worst bit of most jobs.

Mostly they do my head in though.

And no, that's not a sexual position and yeah, I can't quite understand how either but I've got to manage a load of people who are at least 1.5 times my age.

I work in the public sector, they're thoroughly decent people so I doubt they'll be voting Tory, so no need to put them all on immediate performance reviews.

What's the best way to prepare myself for this experience, any books or YouTube videos people recommend on leadership?
Tell them to put up or shut up.

Show them who's boss early doors.

Here mate…
This song should summarise everything you need to know about your future work endeavours:

Can vouch for this, a few random papers and my swipe card for the printer on show as I walk towards the printing room. Before striding straight past it and out the door for another smoke.
Another favourite of mine is leaving my office and marching purposefully into the main office, opening the filing cupboard and tutting aloud as if I can’t find what I’m looking for, then striding purposefully out without saying a word before returning to my office and carrying on watching iPlayer or Netflix on my PC

My word, and I thought I was bad! You're a wrongun mate!

Does any of your work actually get done?! 😂

Luckily for me after COVID I did this whole budget/expense report on how much money we could save on rent if we reduced our office space and let most of the admin staff work from home, and my CEO bought it line, sinker and hook. ;)

So now I can sit in my kecks, shirtless, and watch a movie while I 'work'. 😘

Mate, I’ve been on call since last Monday morning, I have 10 minutes left before I hand over the poisoned chalice to someone else, I have been called at home numerous times every night this week with times ranging from 6pm through to 2.40am , I’ve had :-
1 person with 4 overdose attempts (now in hospital)
1 person with 2 overdose attempts, 1 of them very serious (now in hospital)
1 person very seriously ill after a week on ketamine and cocaine, now on a drip in hospital
1 resident boasting of owning a gun and samurai sword and making threats to shoot the staff … now dealt with by the police after waiting 28 hours for them to turn up
2 under 18,s not returning to the projects so having to be reported to the police as missing
2 sickness absences so having to ring around to arrange shift cover.

It’s my 49th birthday today and tonight I’m going to the local pub, ordering a pint and I’m just going to sit there, staring at it and smiling, because I can 😂

Holy crap! Are you an emergency call responder? 😳

That's the last thing I'd picture you as! And 49? For some reason, I always imagined you as a matured, slightly plump old lad well into his 60's...

Lol, my bad mate... 😂

I feel like a fat 60 year old after this week 😂
No not an emergency responder, although that may be easier 😂, I manage a hostel for young homeless adults 16-24 year olds .. if I had my way this week they’d all be bloody homeless again 😂😂
