That was re-investment, rather than investment. Lukaku & McCarthy were bought with the money we got for Fellaini, Jelavic and Anichebe. Fresh investment is a totally different thing for a club that once went nearly 3 years without paying for a new player.

Recently yes, we have spent some of the massive increase in television money, but for a long long time before that we had to generate our own money. Moyes had a net transfer spend of something like £9 million in over a decade at the club. We are still playing catch up, having a net spend that is comparatively low given the turnover at the club.
