Southgate to remain England manager (For a While)

I personally think this is for the best. Yeah he's limited and won't win any trophy but at least provides stability, and a great leader, players love him.

England have far greater resources to use. The 'golden generation' was always just De Bruyne plus a clutch of good players. Martinez got 3rd place in a WC and kept Belgium the number 1 ranked national team for 6 years on and off.
He had some of the best players in the world.

The golden generation was amazingly talented and he turned them into bums every tourny.

But no trophy? That seemed to be your measuring stick for Southgate.

Nonsense. De Bruyne was the only true world class player. Lukaku and Hazard were very good in their pomp too...but that pomp faded fast in the last two or three years of Martinez's reign as manager of Belgium.

England have had some fantastic talent and have always had much more strength in depth than Belgium.

No.

Come on, Hazard was arguably the 3rd best player in the world from 2016-2019 while Martinez was manager, he was better than De Bruyne at that time.

He still needs to actually beat some top teams. Think the BBC had a stat prior to the World Cup showing his win record against FIFA Top 10 ranked teams was something like 4 out of 15 games. That needs to change if we're to evolve from plucky losers.
He needs to start putting a bit more pressure and expectation on himself and the team IMO

2004-2006 was definitely a better group IMO. The 90s was a strong group too.

90’s wasn’t comparable to this one overall. 2004-06 had a lot of world class talent in the starting XI but nothing off the bench, we were bringing on the likes of Darius Vassell to replace Wayne Rooney in Euro 2004. This squad is definitely stronger overall.

You had players like Carrick and Hargreaves in 04-06 who were massively underused but yeah overall the squad is probably better now. But the starting 11 back then had 7-8 world class players which we don’t have now.

90s is underrated IMO because the management was so horrendous most of the time. But loads of world class players around that time. 94 and 98 were massive failures IMO with the players available

To not even qualify in 94 was abysmal as was the failure to qualify for Euro 08 with the squad we had then. I think that’s my point overall about Southgate when people say he’s England’s best manager since Alf Ramsay, look what he’s up against in that contest, it really doesn’t mean a lot. I think he’d be properly found out in club management, I don’t rate him as a manager at all.
