Southgate to remain England manager (For a While)

I actually think this is really good for England. A lot of international management is just getting the team to gel in a quick period and he's shown he's quite good at that. His tactics really aren't terrible (the US just played a pretty solid game guys) and another day they might beat France be the ones who get to lose to Messi and Argentina in the final. They've got a real shot in 2024 especially if they can find a 3rd midfielder who properly complements Jude and Rice.

Yes because the USA game is the only one in 6 years that he’s got wrong. He is abysmal tactically and it’s pretty much well established by now.

When an actual good manager is in charge it makes a big difference in internationals. Look at how Mancini befuddled Gareth with a weak Italian side, or how Van Gaal nearly toppled Argentina at this World Cup. The likes of Bobby and Gareth can be given the tools but it matter if due to their shoddy workmanship at the crucial moments.
England lost on penalties in an even game. I'm not sure that is a fair assessment at all tbh.

Did you watch that game or are you just looking at stats again? We took the lead in the 2nd minute against a bang average team at home in a European final, and then didn’t have another shot on target for 118 minutes because we refused to leave our own half. The game shouldn’t have even gone to pens and did so as a result of cowardly tactics. That game is his biggest failing in the past 6 years, he cost England that tournament.

As I said I think I'd rather keep the first guy in my lifetime who got the entire English team to pull the same direction and hope he gets the tactics right on the day. He's done that enough to be given some benefit of the doubt I think. There are few tactical masters in the international game. You don't have time.

Give me one example of a match that has been won as a result of Gareth Southgate tactical masterclass and not simply England having better players than the opposition. Last part is pure waffle btw. Not at all true.

I mean the stats would suggest England stunk in that game and I don't really agree. Italy didn't play in Qatar because of the exact tactics England used, they got a bad bounce on one set play and lost a shootout. Unfortunate but it happens.

Italy are a slow, ponderous side much like Spain. When you're ahead you sit back and watch them pass it around until the ref blows.

Ok name them.

In the meantime the German game last summer. Also would say Denmark which you'll surely disagree with, but they were genuinely one of the four best sides at the Euro and England smacked them. It was impressive.

Does he not get credit for what England did against France because Kane missed a penalty? If not then yes he should be sacked.

Erm, what? On what planet is one shot on target in 120 minutes at home to a poor side acceptable?

Nonsense, rubbish. Germany we were absolutely crap and relied on Thomas Muller missing a sitter from clean through, Denmark was a tight contest decided by a controversial penalty in extra time, we didn’t “smack them” at all. I don’t understand your angle for defending Southgate here, it mainly seems to be rival fans that enjoy England consistently falling short that support this career loser remaining in charge.

The one where you're ahead and not conceding real chances. The first time Italy actually created a clear look it went in.

And shots on target is the biggest myth stat in the world.

Did you watch the game of football? England didn’t leave their own half from the 2nd minute onwards. That Italian side was there for the taking and the game could’ve been put to bed long before they even equalised. Listen, I understand you want the man who has done nothing in his career but relegate a previously stable mid-table Middlesbrough side to remain in charge of England, but you’re utterly failing to make any sort of a convincing argument in his favour. I could go on all night listing Southgate’s failures as a manager but honestly I can’t be bothered.

As I've said multiple times I just don't believe tactical knowledge is more important than the ability to simply have a strong sense of togetherness and the ability for everyone to do their specific job well in the plan you have in international football. Argentina, Italy and France all did this. England have that. You may lose that when Southgate goes and who is coming in to bring the other side of it?

I’m willing to take that risk on the off chance that there’s someone out there that has half a tactical brain in their head and won’t bring Raheem Sterling on for our best player in a quarter final.

And you could end up with a bunch of half arsed individuals again to the point that it doesn't matter.

International football is a different beast.

I don't think this England is too different overall talent wise from the England of 2006 to 2012. But they're way better at pushing on in tournaments. Southgate deserves no credit?
