Sports personality of the year

When Hamilton was on Top Gear he drove the same car in wet conditions faster than most of the pro drivers.

He's the Tiger of Motorsports, just freakily gifted.

That's what Hoy and the other cyclists do every race though

If he wins the WC next year by all means give it him, but it's an Olympic year and we had the best British performance for around 100 years. It's gotta be an Olympian. Hamilton can have it next year.

this is our first f1 win for 12 years. it was won by a driver who most consider will be the best of his generation as well as the youngest ever winner of the sport.

it put british motor racing right back on the map and we can now say the best driver in the world is british.

the cycling team were awesome, but outside of england or perhaps europe, there was not much interest.

i guess it really depends where your personal interests lie. if you love F1 then you want hamilton to win. if you love cycling then you want hoy to win.

both would deserve the title though.

I'd like to see Murray get some recognition, but until he wins a major, can't see it happening.

Hoy should get it - Hamilton barely won his title, winning only 5 of 18 races with 7/18 poles whilst Hoy dominated this years World Championships and the Olympics in both the keirin and sprint (and team) events.

Team : Man Utd / Men Cyclists

Young Personality : Laura Robson

Overseas : Nadal / Vladimir Klitschko (depending on what happens with his Rahman fight on the 13th!)

Lifetime : Jackie Stewart

Hoy was the first ever Britain to win 3 golds in one games. That's the first in 100+ years. Add in that he's a 9 time World Champion in addition to his 4 Olympic golds. Undoubtably the best of his generation.

Or you could say Becky Adlington was the first female swimming champ in 40 odd years, and quite possibly the first female double gold winner ever (in the pool).

Nicole Cooke won both Olympic and World road race titles in addition to being womens Tour de France winner in 2006 and 2007 (third this year).

It's also worth bearing in mind that Chris Hoy's favourite event (the Kilo) was removed from the Olympic schedule so he had to retrain for other events in order to win his golds.

I dare say there are considerably more competitive cyclists than there are competitive racing drivers :) Look at the Tour de France for instance. When it started in London in 2007 around 1 million people came to watch and it's certainly not as big here as it is in Europe. You sure don't get that many at Silverstone. Track cycling is the same. Go to Japan for some of the Keirin races there, it's huge. The leading Keirin rider in Japan won $1.6 million in 2007.

If anything the sport isn't as big here as it is elsewhere, which makes our achievements all the more special because we are taking on countries where cycling is huge and kicking their arse.

Like I said, Olympics only come round once every four years and our team was fantastic this year. They deserve the recognition. Hamilton is a fine driver and can win it next year ;)

Interesting one this year, such a great year for sport makes it very difficult to choose.

Chris Hoy - Sports Personality.

British Olympic Team - Team Award.

Usain Bolt - Overseas.

Rebecca Adlington - Young Sports Personality (She's 19 can I get away with that?)

Joe Calzaghe - Lifetime Achievement.

this is the most interest i've taken in the sports personality for years!

cheers bruce!

i've got work to do, so i can't give your well reasoned reply the thought and attention i perhaps should.

hoy has a chance as i remember redgrave winning a few years back so our olympians do get the credit they deserve.

i don't go for the woman winning in the pool.. i mean it's great, but if she was the first to win a gold then lets not celebrate our crapness in the water too much!

to compare popularity of sports is difficult. there are 250,000 people at silverstone over an f1 race weekend. these people are spending minimum 100 pounds a ticket.

how much does it cost to watch a cycling event? i'm not sure people would be lining the streets if it cost a ton to do so.

the global audience of f1 is massive. it is one of the most watched sporting events on the planet, with every champion being a household name.

sports aside... it comes down to what you think is better.

a triple gold medalist or the youngest ever f1 winner

both are cool and represent the country well.

if hoy wins, cool.. but as an f1 fan i'd like to see hamilton win.

Probably shouldn't get so involved in it :D As a cyclist I can appreciate that the sport is a minority one in Britain so it probably doesn't get the attention it deserves. Hamilton is the bookies favourite and will probably win (boo, hiss ).

Given that BBC have the rights to F1 next year it wouldn't be a surprise if Hamilton won it

My picks:

Sports personality: Chris Hoy
Overseas sports personality: Usain Bolt
Team of the Year: Wales Rugby union team (Grand Slam winners & beat Australia)

Between Bolt, Phelps and Nadal. They've all had a fantastic year .

I don't like F1 or Cycling so I'd give it to Phil Jagielka.

My favourite moment in sport (apart from footie) this year was provided by Bolt.
But Michael Phelps achievment was incredible (I don't like swimming) and Rafael Nadal won The French open, Wimbledon, Olympic gold and dethroned Federer as world number 1. He was unluckily injured and missed out on Spain's Davis cup triumph (I went off tennis years ago).

The only way it depends on that fight is if Rahman shits it, Runs 100m in 8.5 seconds to the nearest pool, where he then wins 25 golds, gets out and then wins two consecutive British Opens in golf with his gloves on.

I would love to see Harrington win it as what he did, by retaining the British open is a special feat, but the fact that Usain Bolt loitered over the finish line is just supreme.
