…I think the defensive aspect of their game improves but the thing I most like is converting wingers to play FB.

it’s nothing new, the greatest I’ve seen at Everton was Ray Wilson who started out as a winger. Tommy Wright was an attacker & John Hurst a central striker in an FA Youth Cup winning team. Even Tony Hibbert was a defensive midfielder in an FA Youth Cup winning team.

Having that background does naturally help defend in one-on-ones but most importantly they have athleticism and real quality in possession. Mills has a bit of his Dads mentality, he has a chance of a career in the game.

Most lads at Academy level, who play in defence, have started off in other positions.

Usually due to them losing a bit of pace, when they hit puberty and they bulk up / body changes shape.

….yep, mentioned on previous pages & Youth thread. Will be interesting to see what shape the team had & what role he played.

From a clip on Southport's Twitter of the team walking out I think this was the starting XI but hard to know really what the lineup would have been. Could have been a 4-3-3, could have been 3-5-2 with one of John or Mallon at CB. No one will know.

Leban (GK)
Kyle John (RB)
Matty Mallon (RB)
Reece Welch (CB)
Eli Campbell (CB)
Isaac Price (CM)
Luke Butterfield (CM)
Lewis Warrington (CM)
Stan Mills (RM)
Tom Cannon (ST)
Charlie Whitaker (ST)

As I’ve said elsewhere, I’m pretty sure that’s Mackenzie Hunt not Matt Mallon, in which case he’d have played left back with two CBs as you’ve got , so a back 4 but who knows after that

…a lower tier but I presume their first team of open-age footballers. It a big difference playing against men, even semi-professionals.

i expect Mills’ Dad is chuffed with how things are going.
most defiantly, can't do much more the lad. Done well pre season, lampard said he was there due to his hard work and now 3 goals for u21.

Hope he keeps progressing.

I wonder if his Daddy is advising him?? Most likely is giving he is his father after all. In last year of his contract isn't he young Stanley, Daddy hasn't been complimentary to us in the past.....

Might not bode well

You mean pace comparative to peers. I recall getting much faster
