Take the Star Wars films, the older 3 should be terrible, weak storylines, awful acting and special effects that made you laugh, but they are vastly superior to the later 3, its not even close.

I personally thought the later 3 films were utter pants.

I agree.

But you can't just dismiss new films as all being crap. Otherwise what's the point?

Im not mate, but its been a while since I watched a film and thought "yeah, that was really good", I just want the "Summer Blockbusters" back, we used to get 2-3 really big films every year, now we are lucky if we get a good film every year.

agreed.

the first 3 have a charm with their memorable characters. Han Solo + Leia + Vader + Yoda + The Emperor (even Luke was great when he went all Jedi). The prequels only had The Emperor as the sole interesting character, the rest were so stiff it was embarrassing (new Yoda was a parody, and let's not even mention Annakin/Vader).

Or to put it in film-school terms, the prequel characters were written, directed and acted so poorly that it affected our suspension of disbelief in the story.

nope, but the issue is that the newer trilogy is more typical of how modern action blockbusters are made now. So that's why some us think the latest trilogy will be horrid (same director as the rancid Star Trek reboot too).

#1 not as bad as it's made out
#2 awful
#3 made the best of a bad situation

Then again, I grew up on Star Wars so maybe I look at them with the Blast Shield on. But yeeah, the original trilogy is far superior.

Except for the acting, I thought Ford and Fisher were excellent in Empire Strikes Back.
