...but it really is the lack,of strategy and direction that is a concern. You look at Michael Keane; Walsh may have thought £25m was a fair price for a full England international who has got good size and is a great age. But when you look strategically at the signing, he lacks mobility and is a forwards dream to run at. It means your team model must be to play deep so he’s not exposed by players running at him or in behind.
Its a funny one mate admittedly i had this very argument about Keane with a Burnley fan the other day. i said he wasnt in the team due to his lack of pace, he said to me what had we done to him.
I think it depends on the focus of what you are trying to achieve. I mean was the brief, to assemble a team of tiers with established proven Pl players for the immediacy and buy the best young talent low and sell high if need be. Or was it his remit to balance the squad or the first team coaches. There was an interview in his first few month where he said part of the process that the manager tells him, what position he wants and the attributes and he provides the options. Obviously he has a hand in decision making.
It begs the question is he an administrator or is he a "football man" actually responsible for the first team dynamic or is that the manager. All our judgments on that will be different.
