..yep. First thing you do is sit down with the manager and define how you want your team to play. You then buy players that fit the system. We’re not talking about anything clever here, it’s just common sense.

The 'manager' role is the problem though?
The DoF should be defining the style of play that all teams, from youth to 1st team adhere to.
He, is the manager and all the teams are 'coached', to play the same way.
Sam Allardyce should not be our manager, he should be our coach! (or neither as you like)
It doesn't seem to working that way and Walsh is basically, with BK, our head of player recruitment.
We need to either, immerse ourselves with this philosophy or, have a chief scout answering to the manager?
I don't think the wishy washy attempt at it has been good so far.

"Everton talking to PSV supremo Marcel Brands about joining their player recruitment set-up"

DOF at PSV. The Mirror are reporting this but not claiming he'll replace Walsh if he comes but that he'll provide a 'global dimension to the work of director of football Steve Walsh'.

Walsh won’t like that.

That will be all those “scouting” trips to Italy and France kicked into touch.

As for the bloke they are talking about appointing.....the state of Dutch football, I would not think this an inspired choice

Though I have just Googled him and it seems he was linked to the DOF vacancy at Chelsea last year.

Getting the replacement in for Walsh before we get rid?

Director of football working so well it seems we’re getting another one .

IF there’s substance to this story (it’s the Mirror after all), then at least that’s an admittance by the board that they’re not happy with job Walsh has done so far and so they shouldn’t be either. I hope this is true as at least it shows they’re doing something about the poor recruiting over the last 24 months.

Whichever way it might be spun, this will be a huge slap in the face for Walsh and if this fella did come in, I could see him be either moved on or quit.

Like I say it’s the Mirror so obviously caution needs to be taken here, but seems a bit of a random link not to have legs.

I hope this guy is replacing Walsh not working under him. That would be enough to destroy anyone's morale.

He assembled a league winning side with mediocre resources at AZ. PSV have always produced a reasonable amount of good players. At least he has credentials in the role which extend beyond PE teaching and being able to work out Zola is a decent footballer.

I don’t understand the story. Sounds like we’re recruiting him to work with Walsh, not as a direct replacement. Surely he can’t be sticking around?

CV key skills once spotted Zola... can teach PE.

I was listening to the radio the other night when I was driving home in the car and the subject of Steve Walsh was brought up. It said that Everton had done well to get him in and that he was a transfer guru of sorts, I.e. He has a lot of contacts, agents like him and he has a lot of experience brokering deal. Just remembered it was talk sport as Joey Barton was singing Walshs praises. The chat was that although we had brought Walsh in from Leicester he was only part of a broader and very accomplished scouting and recruitment team that has since been dismantled with many moving to pastures new.

This is all probably old news by now but it did help to explain why we aren't unearthing previously unheard continental talent.

Barton referred to a good press article in the guardian or independent but not sure which!
