It literally is the dumbest thing in the world. We targeted Giroud then, when he turned us down, decided "nah, don't need anyone else in that spot". We targeted Kolasinic and, then, when he went to Arsenal decided "nah, don't need anyone else in that spot". We targeted a left sided/footed CB and, when that didn't work out with target 'A' decided "nah, don't need anyone in that spot".

The biggest joke in football. Maybe it's us as we are paying him a fortune do the square root of F all.

I don't understand the need for a DOF. A role which has never worked in our league. Our Clubs have done well for a number of years without one, just more 'cool' foreign stuff, my ass, terrible role, for me the manager should have complete control of everything football, it's his neck on the line at the end of the day.

I am genuinely baffled as to how this man is still in a job.

We've splashed out an unprecedented amount of money on loads of players since Lukaku went, and he's failed so much. Incredibly really, would he have been kept on anywhere else? Let's not forget his entire reputation is based around signing three(!) players and that's it (Vardy, Mahrez, Kante).

Sandro - deemed not good enough by three managers this season, doesn't even get into the u23s squad to retain match sharpness
Klaassen - even worse than Sandro as he cost 25m and will be on huge wages. Even if he was brought back into the team now he'd need at least a few games to get match fit. Crazy waste of money
Rooney - No way this was a Koeman move. I'd say initiated by Kenwright and ok'd by Walsh. Not quite as bad as the Klaassen deal as he'll be 'only' on about 50k a week more, but unbelievable to offer him a two-year deal when everybody knew his legs had gone
Sigurdsson - technically a good player, but not the player we needed. I like him - I think we all do - but we had much more pressing issues and 45m and weeks and weeks wasted on this transfer was diabolical
Martina - A Koeman transfer, but we know all transfers were also agreed with Walsh. Not even League One standard and Walsh gave this one the thumbs up too
Keane - He had the reputation, but has been a gigantic flop. Another 25m wasted when we could have signed either of the other CBs for Burnley who have proven themselves better than Keane this season, or Maguine who went to Leicester and has impressed, or simply somebody from abroad. 25m gets you an awful lot more
Vlasic - A signing completely out of the blue, possibly out of desperation. Joined us and has barely featured under three managers. Doesn't that say it all too?

About 110m and over half a million spunked away on the players above

+ Didn't sign the left back we desperately needed
+ Didn't sign the striker we desperately needed

Yet he's still untouchable? Extremely concerning.

IMO the problem is, his head was on the chopping block, but made the club panic and get Sam in. Sam was 100% his appointment, and unfortunately only strengthened his position in the club.

He should have been made as just as accountable as Koeman when Koeman was let go, even though that was his decision and in his hands, the board (HAHAHAHAHAHA I KNOW) need to grow a set and hold him just as accountable, if not more as he HAS to sign off the transfers.

I dont see him leaving until Sam does, unless we bring in someone else like this dutch fella, and he moved to "head of recruitment" or something.

It's just pure crazy. Poor decision after poor decision. Director of Football rarely works out. It hasn't worked out for us. This leech needs binning off as soon as possible.

I can see it working and if am honest I am probably happy if the club keeps going with it and brings in a proven DOF, if the clubs requirements and job description are right...

the problem is we brought someone in who has NEVER fulfilled that role, he was head scout AND assistant manager at Leicester... I really struggle to see how that transfers to the DOF role.

I didn't think it possible but when it's written down like that it is stark and damning and has made me even more depressed. Thanks a lot.

I'd disagree with you over the Rooney transfer, think that's been good business (he's our top scorer and generally outperformed Sigurdsson in terms of chances created, assists and goals scored) but as you've said, I don't think he was a Steve Walsh signing. Agree with the rest. Still think Keane will come good but it's a concern that he hasn't improved since Allardyce came in, whereas the rest of our defence has picked up.

To add to your post though, you could go back even further:

Bolasie - Potentially our record transfer at the time we signed him, he hasn't come close to justifying the fee paid for him. Obviously he's been unlucky with the injury he had, but frustrates more often than he delivers.
Lookman - Potential to be a great player, but 11 million is alot for a lad of his age and he's yet to live up to the price we paid for him. He's shown glimpses of brillance but 3 managers now haven't fancied him. Looked like he'd be loaned out or even sold at one point during this transfer window.
Schneiderlin - Started great, helped turn our season round when he arrived last season, but his forms been poor this season and his attitude's questionable. Looks like he'll end up at West Ham and the club will make a loss on him.
Williams - On paper he looked like the ideal replacement for Stones, his stats for shots blocked, tackles, interceptions etc. all looked great. He's never looked like the player he was for Swansea or Wales, starting a riot against Lyon has been his most memorable moment in blue so far.
