Steven Gerrard: GOT Retrospective

Has anyone in the media picked up that since that Chelsea game, Gerrard's career has just bombed?

After the loss to Chelsea, they had Crystanbul, Gerrard then went on to captain England's worst world cup performance ever, including some shocking performances himself and the assist the to key goal that eliminated England from the world cup. Liverpool's best run of form this season came with him out the team, his two biggest objectives for the season, when it became obvious they were nowhere near a title challenge again, finishing 4th and the FA Cup on his birthday both ended in failure and then to top it all off, his final home game, his big farewell, he was anonymous for 75% of the game until he threw himself upfront for the final 20 minutes and just looked like a headless chicken.

I don't deny he has been a quality player throughout his career, and while I see a lot of mileage in the Roy Keane argument that Gerrard lacks the ability to make those around him great and that's why he isn't a truly world class player, he has undoubtedly been a great player for Liverpool (though not England) over the last 15 years, but his last 12 months have been car crash after train wreck. Despite all the denial and willful ignorance, he really is going out on an ever falling trajectory.

He was a good player , had a bit of everything in his locker, scored goals, tackled, got up and down the pitch, and unfortunately had the knack of scoring important goals
carried liverpool at times, think they will miss him even at this stage of his career, best in the prem not sure really you could say that about half a dozen players at certain times, would have ronaldo any day of the week

Bringing Hamann on and a shed load of lady luck is what won Liverpool the CL final just as much as Gerrard's dive. Gerrard was nowhere near the races in the first half.

Keane missed most of the 97/98 season and United won diddly squat. He returns, they win the league 3 years on the bounce.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but Gerrard doesn't come close to Keane or Scholes for me.

This. The thing I find most galling is people comparing Gerrard to the European greats, when he wasn't up there with the best of British (and Irish)

He's the least successful of that England golden generation (if you ignore the keeper(s)).

RB: Neville
CB: Ferdinand
CB: Terry
LB: A. Cole
RM: Beckham
CM: Gerrard
CM: Lampard
LM: J. Cole
ST: Owen
ST: Rooney

I know a lot of that is a reflection for the teams they were playing for too, but if you think Gerrard was the reason he didn't pick up a premier league winners medal, it does say a lot about the winning mentality and how to reflect on their careers.

I'm not gonna get in to an argument over who is the best, blah blah blah, but genuinely if I had the choice of over 700 plus appearances for Everton or 4 or 5 Premier League winners medals with Chelsea, Arsenal or United I'd take Everton every time mate.

I know they all play in different positions so hard to judge, but I would say that apart from Owen and Joe Cole, the other players in that list were all better footballers than Slippy.

It has probably been said before, but the reason Benitez did well for a time over there is because he recognized what Slippy's limitations were and booted him out of midfield to play up front behind Torres. If England had done the same they would probably have done better, especially in 2002 or 2006.

He was absolutely brilliant. Is the best compliment I can pay him, as he goes off to the U.S. to earn millions. I'm sure this will help him sleep easy.

In his book, he says "if it wasn't for Bryan, I'd have packed it in years ago"...........Thanks Bry........
