Steven Naismith

The problem I have with the criticism of players like Naismith is that some of our fans are hypocritical. They are quite happy to justify ineffective games that Mirallas has because he shows flashes of brilliance, but when Naismith contributes little, they slaughter him for not being a brilliant player.

The reason Martinez picks players like Naismith, who at the end of the day is primarily a grafter who can weigh in with some important goals, is because while he's having a bad game, he's still putting the effort in and most likely providing some defensive cover or getting in the oppositions face. He's got the right attitude which managers love. That's why players like Milner have had such effective careers in this league.

Players like Mirallas for example, have talent in abundance, but when they're having a bad game, they go missing or sulk and contribute nothing.

The challenge Martinez faces with having more options now, is keeping all of those players happy like Deulofeu, Lennon, Mirallas and Naismith because they can all contribute in different ways.
I agree mate, and to be honest i'm probably part of the mirallas brigade lol

I just feel, when we play naismith we aren't doing so for any reason other than to hope he does something, hope he scores, hope he runs around enough. I can't see the player there, whereas take kone for example, you can see what exactly he does. Going back the chelsea game, ok naismith scores the hat trick and gets all the plaudits, rightly so. Kone was immense all over the pitch for us on the right. And he is a terrible midfielder, but his 'role' that game was getting his head on every set piece which he did, that was his team role. Naismith doesn't seem to have that role n my perspective, he just plays, and if he does well then its well done manager, if he doesn't then he is a wasted postion for the 70+ minutes he is on (cant pass, cant tackle).

I definitely see where you are coming from and I think it's fine for fans to have concerns about his role. It just annoys me when people make out like Naismith contributes nothing when it's not true.

I would like Martinez to pick the best team for specific game though and not based just on experience or certain philosophies he seems to have. I know he likes defensive cover which is sensible but there are certain games where we would give the opposition something to worry about by starting off with Deulofeu and having that intensity and our wingers running at their full backs.

Too often we take the cautious approach and play the slow boring sideways passing and I don't think having Naismith out there helps that. We have so much talent in the team that we need to change our mentality a bit and realise that other teams should fear playing us and not the other way round.

I fully agree mate. especially that last bit. the players are there, we just need to change that little bit more. To name check naismith, he came on vs southampton and looked out of place in our team, ran into trouble, wasn't the fastest, but before that the attack was looking deadly.

That is our strength in the team that a lot of people don't seem to notice. Barkley plays at his best running forward with the ball when the defence are back tracking, when he is stood still or faced with a wall of players he loses his effectiveness. Lukaku i am a massive fan of, how often do we give him the ball facing goal? we are playing off him like a centre forward now but if we gave him the ball in and around the box so he could shoot more then perhaps he would score a few more! In del and mirallas we have wingers who are attack minded and have a bit of pace, in lennon and Mcgeady (who i don't rate) we have hard working wingers who can run the channels all game long.

Point is there are different options and like you say different tactics there for different games. We just need martinez to see that.

He really needs to be sold. He is an average Premier League player that would be more suited to a bottom half team. He was a free transfer and we have clubs offering near enough 12 million Euros for him. His stock will never be higher, and we need to sell him in order to buy players that are capabale of playing in the top 25% of the league. Would anyone be distraught if he was injured? No, so lets cash in and get 12 million Euros for him, and then replace him with a far better player.

i want to see him leave because i think he's no where near the level of player we need at everton, and his technical ability is so bad that it often is a detriment to the team, and i'd rather spent the money we got from selling him and his wages on someone better.

I'll be surprised if he is on the roster for next season

I wouldn't. He rejected a bid for him when he first arrived, and then £8m from Norwich more recently. We should definitely be selling him for that but we won't.

Our only hope is if Naismith requests the move to get more first team football.

Wasn't it us who immediately rejected the 8 million bid from Norwich?

Euros? Roster?!

Please no xx

I'd rather have Naismith than Mirallas. Even though with Mirallas' skills he's not the greatest of players for our squad, but I still want to see him succeed. When he takes the ball away from Baines and misses the PK or gets a red card minutes after he's subbed on that's not good for the team.

The best thing about Naismith is his intelligence for the game and willingness to be a pain in the ass to the opposition- to do anything to be in the head of an opposing player. To me that helps give our side an edge.

Brilliant post this, mate.

This, your opening line all day long. Two squad players only one has won the fans over by scoring a total of three more goals, and booting Suarez!
