Suarez's Punishment

Just because it's less lenient than the previous inadequate punishments does not mean it is sufficient. It is FIFA's own fault they have set themselves such weak precedents. They should have banned him for eighteen months, with half the ban suspended. That would have given them room to reduce it a bit on appeal if necessary, yet still make it a proper deterrent ban.

Let me put it this way: If your kid played football for his school, and was bitten by a kid from another team who had previously bitten players in two other games, would you be satisfied if half his playing ban for his third offence covered time when no matches take place anyway?

You're right in saying it's not as lenient as the previous bans. You're wrong in saying it isn't lenient.

I was meaning in the sense that we are talking about FIFA here. Said in loads of posts they should throw the book at him, and I wouldnt disagree with a word you have written, esp the suspended bit.

The player has managed to set a precedent in FIFA land. Takes some doing that.

If you add up all the matches he will miss, pre season, league, CL, possibly cups, plus internationals, it isnt far short of that actually.

Missing club/international friendlies isnt much of a punishment is it.

Take those out and its about 12 competitive games. He'll still train and be in peak fitness when he returns.

He might be. Just highlighting the fact that the global ban from football, not just a set number of matches, is actually quite important. He cant train with the club, he cant use the gym, he cant go to any stadium, presumably access to the clubs medical staff is included, cant even go on pre season tours, sit in team meetings, be included in tactical discussions, (OK, he might actually benefit from missing those!).

He is on his own for 4 months. When all he wants to do is play football. Might do his nut.

Like I have said, I would have thrown the book at him, but we are where we are, and the number of games he will miss for Liverpool is less of an issue for him than the global ban from football.

@skysports_bryan: FIFA say Luis Suarez is not now allowed to stay in Uruguay's team hotels here in Brazil.

haha belive he cant even watch the match in the ground, does he have to stay away from Anfield when they are playin, the rs fans wont be able to show their love to him. lol

Yep. Cant go near the place. That is what I was saying. Everyone focusing on the number of Liverpool games he will miss, but that global ban is in some ways worse. For him I mean.

He cant go to anything football related for 4 months. Anywhere in the world. That would do my nut more than missing 10 or 12 games.

How will they enforced this? who going to know if in training or not?

Managed it with Cantona. He had a similar ban, and was pulled up when Fergie tried to get him a kick about, literally, with a local non league lot.

And that was before everyone was a walking TV camera.
