Summer 2018 Transfer Window

Because it's rare you sign a player you've sold four months previously.

By the time of the following windows, Spurs had improved and had Eriksen, Son, Lamela etc. They had other areas they wanted to strengthen (CB, FB).

But it wasn’t 4 months previously, they could have signed him whenever they wanted at any time during the next 3 years, if Pochettino rated him that highly. And they already had Eriksen and Lamela when they sold him.

Umititi plays alongside Pique at club level, who in turn played alongside Puyol
Varane plays alongside Ramos at club level.
Some of the most experienced players around to help them over the past 2/3 seasons.
Stones was always at his best alongside an experienced Distin

You cant just chuck 2 inexperienced centre backs together and expect them to be great, it just dosent work like that
This is not a "gotcha" moment but a genuine question. How old were Jags and Lescott when they were paired together? I know not 21 but weren't they about 24?

No I wasn’t.

Okay. What about by the end of the window?

I mean, we all had a moan about the striker, but you at least had to concede we'd spent money.

We do need to get a move on with signings but in the meantime we've got the squad all in pre-season bar three players. We've got a new manager who is a very highly-thought of coach and a DoF who is actually experienced in that role.

We are where we're at as a consequence of the reckless spending over the last 18 months. You keep advocating more reckless spending. We can't afford it.

Doesn't mean we're skint. It just means we aren't able to bankroll a 40-man squad and another £100m of transfer fees.

Any player that’s being bought for £45m should be able to get a game for a team above us. ANY player.

The fee isn't his fault. Our fault for paying it. You've got a real arse on over that fee. Genuinely, let it go.

He's a player that is more than good enough for where we're at and - in the immediate future - where we can realistically expect to be. Hopefully in two/three years' time we've matched what Spurs have done in terms of consistent top four finishes.

We overpaid. We overpaid for most of the players last season. We're suffering the consequences of that now because the management at the time had no idea how to use their new toys.

Of course I have, and everyone should, not once have I blamed him for putting that price tag on himself though, I’ve solely blamed our worst ever manager for it. But that doesn’t mean we should brush it under the carpet. We are not a club that can spend that amount of money on single players. We had one opportunity to do that for probably the next decade, and we bought Gylfi Sigurdsson. It’s a catastrophe.

That money should have gone on a striker. No doubt about it.

Then again, we had the striker we wanted nearly done for a much lower fee, only for it to crumble. And I'm struggling to think of a £45m striker that would have signed for us, btw. Because there aren't many about.

So it's easy to say the money would be better spent elsewhere, but really it just needed to be split.

We should have gone no higher than £30-35m and left it there, but we wanted the player and last summer Moshiri gave the regime in charge the go ahead to spend where they saw fit.

Now, people are moaning because we aren't doing the same thing.

Players will always be judged on their price tags, it's ridiculous to suggest otherwise. If United had signed Pogba for £100k from Northampton Town people would talk about it as the best bit of business ever conducted, because they paid £90m a bit more is expected of him and so he's seen to be a disappointment. We don't have infinite resources so we need all of our signings to at least hold their value, if not substantially increase it. Last year we spent £45m on Sigurdsson and the bottom line is there wasn't much difference in our performances whether he was in the side or not. We absolutely cannot afford to make that sort of signing again because ultimately it will end up being catastrophic. If we spend big on players they simply must massively improve the team.

Surprised we're not in for this guy. Almost guaranteed to be a superstar with his physique and pace. And we should be able to offer him more gametime than Manu and Juve.
He has six goals in last two games. Although in Norway, still impressive for a 17 yo.

Almost guaranteed to be a superstar, come on mate. lol, Have you seen him play? and do you remember martin odegaard.
