Summer 2018 Transfer Window

...we were strongly linked with Colombian midfielder Wilmar Barrios in the summer and I noticed another rumour just a few weeks ago. If I recall rightly, he has a £15m release clause but Boca Juniors owner was desperate to keep hold of him until January. The suggestion is that he will be even cheaper then.

Given Brands’ South American connections and the summer links, I wouldn’t be surprised if there is something in this one.
Was impressed with him at the world cup, liked his playstyle, loved his headbutt on Jordan Henderson, would be worth a gamble for that alone

Sure theres the odd bargain around, but if you want quality you have to pay the big bucks and yes its on Brands to try and find them, but we are a high profile English team. Everybody in football knows we spend big, so we will get shafted on almost every player we sign.

I blame Steve Walsh personally, the whole of Europe knows we will pay whatever fee they put infront of us.
I think that’s the reason Brands walked away from the Tierney deal
Also why he hung on the Mina deal till the last minute and wouldn’t up his bid.
He’s letting clubs know he won’t be screwed on price
The man has a long standing excellent reputation all around the world and people will know he won’t be taken for a fool and will have options

Maddison. Vardy. Drinkwater. Deeney. Wilson. Would they all play and improve us, I'd say they'd be in and yet it's crazy what those lads cost their clubs. Everton seem like sitting ducks in the market with an obsession for expensive and overseas that I just cannot understand.

ermmm, wha? you're quoting players who were bought about 5+ years ago, way before figures got silly. We got cahill, coleman and arteat for pennies years ago as well. Maddison has started well, but we didn't need him. We got richarlison and bernard who are both better players and that will show as the season progresses. Our obsession recently has been spending way too much on dross from britain! That's been our problem (williams, bolasie, keane, , schneiderlin, siggurdsson (to an extent)) not our overseas signings.

Now eggs you know the rules
You can’t mention a player without putting up a massive YouTube video with thumping house music as an accompaniment lol

Just for you @Eggs
Seemingly Spurs fans thought they were going to sign him before they realised they were skint and I mean Kenwright levels of skint
He would have been seen as a replacement for Dembele I would assum

..before retirement I was a Government IT Project Manager but the reality is I’d find it difficult to upload a You Tube video, Bri.
Ah retirement
Mine is hopefully 2-3 years away
My dad god rest him really enjoyed his
He said every Monday morning was a bank holiday Monday
He enjoyed getting up at 7 am liking out the window at the lashing rain and getting back into bed
He used to ring up his best mates in work at 7 am to make sure they were up for work
Judging by you transfer reports you are still an early riser
That won’t be me
As we say in Dublin
The streets will be well aired before I get out of bed when I retire lol

Always surprised by the focus on overseas players. The sh&te have increased their number of domestic and Irish players and they're improving.

Chelsea had Terry, Bridge, Cole, Cole, Lampard, United's glory days fielded a team often 65+ % domestic & Irish. Our own giddier times under Moyes: Jags, Baines, Coleman, Osman, Unsy, Weir, Naismith, Hibbo, Lescott, Big Dunc :) The point I'm making is less about nationality and spare me any EDL crud... it's about character, loyalty and team values. It's hard to build that with so many transitional players in and out of the UK. Upping the number of home grown players increases the likely length of time they may stay and grow those values and identity. Incoming players are then a clearer 'fit' or not.

When we didn't always have the quality to play teams off the park under Moyes, our attitude often did. With the mix right, overseas players could forge clear Everton identities, too. Hands up who loved Yak, Yobo, Gravesen, Arteta, Cahill, Howard. I know I did. Even a few firebrands like Drenthe didn't look out of place. And they were an extra influence on Ross and Seamus who've by and large served us brilliantly (barring Ross' decline under Martinez when many of the same values in defence and midfield had declined).

I understand the search for quality - and it's harder than ever but I am concerned at progress from U21 and U23 and the desire for talent and quick wins to take priority over the identity and character in our side that had us above higher spending City, Spurs, Newcastle, Liverpool for a so many seasons.

For the avoidance of doubt, aI like any fan will welcome quality from anywhere - but think we should prioritise and give more opportunity to our own young lads first and be patient. The merry go round of bad spending under Conman and Walsh honestly makes me feel ill when I think hard about it. By and large, once Mina plays I think Brands/ Silva's first forays can be judged and probably look OK.. But why does every new signing need to be a 30m guy we've never seen in the Prem before.

I think you make 3 interesting points here;

A-- English players

If you look at the RS they had Gerrard and Caragher + Chelsea had Cole, Terry and Lampard plus Arsenal had Seaman,Winterburn, Dixon, Adams, Keown and later Campbell amongst others...very strong cores of English players.

Benitez added a latin flavour of Alonso, Mascherano, Torres...Wenger added Anelka,Henry, Vieira,Petit, pires etc...Chelsea went for a few different nationalities but from France Desailly, Lebouef, Drogba, Essien etc

At the moment under 30 we have Pickford as the only current English international and Keane a recentish capped player. Although we do have a raft of U21 lads; Holgate,Kenny,Davies,Dowell,Lookman, DCL the most obvious, but others behind them too.

8 English players getting gametime in and around the 11 isnt too shabby + i think the mentality of the signings weve made is spot on.

B-- Value for money

When someone like Maguire is being touted at £50-60mil and Walker sold at around at £50mil then the sums are huge compared to Mina for example. In fact, Digne, Richarlison and Bernard cost a touch under £80mil combined.

I think Brands will be key here as well as Silvas knowledge of Portugal and South America.

C-- U21 players

Holgate, Kenny, Robinson, Davies, Baningime, Dowell, Lookman, Richarlison, DCL + Vlasic and Onyekuru makes 11 u21 players who are all capped in their age group or fully (aside from Baningime).

What we need to do this season is assess their current ability and judge whether they may get to the top and then make decisions in summer.

DCL 1.5mil / Lookman £7.5-11mil / Vlasic £10mil / Onyekuru £7mil / Holgate £1mil are all players who we have taken relative gambles on and are now worth far more. Richarlison looks to be the same.

We should be looking at going for more players like this...but if we are aiming to be a top side then we need to allocate a budget each season whilst also going for players like Cook at Palace and Wan-Bissaka at Palace once we feel there are good enough, then of course spend on them.

We were the only team in for mina at that stage united had already pulled out

They signed him for 10m and sold him for nearly treble the price despite being a bench player.

For good measure threw in a crocked gomes.

Won't be taken for a fool you say.

..looks a back-four protector. Just like Lee Carsley, you only realise how effective they are when they don’t play.
With the attacking threat we can pose a good DM to protect the back 4 is just as important as a CF
I was a bit blase over us signing Barry but when you seen him in action you realised the difference he made to the team
A good Dm allows the attackers much more freedom from their defensive duties.
I remember an interview with Chelsea’s main players back in Jose’s first spell there and to a man they all said Makele was their most important player
They said he allowed the rest to play football

Harvey check your facts
United were there till the end but bailed at the buyback
Jose was desperate for a CB despite having bought Lindelof and Bailly and having Jones and Smalling
You’re basically talking wham as usual

They bailed out due to the agent fees, they weren't there to the end at all.
4 days after they cancelled the deal we signed him.

We should of had the upper hand, Barca wanted rid, we were the only team interested and it was the last day of the season.
Yet they still nearly trebled his price, which was basically based on his Colombia appearances.
