Buts that's not going to strengthen the side when the money used on those players could help fill a gap, better to do that them to double up on a slot that doesn't need to be addressed.

We will need a keeper as Stekelenburg is useless and for 15-20mil we could get Pickford (sold after relegation) or a bit more for Butland (I don't think stoke could risk another injury)...you don't get to the top of the table without a super keeper and for the price I think its worth it

Just to take Tierney out of them, he'd walk into almost any premier league side, looks like the Baines of old

That is some terrible defending if I do say so myself regardless of the skill. On the pull back the defender to the left is just standing still in that sequence.

I think you'd find he would look a little more average against premier league outfits.

If you look at them individually performance wise this season none of those I mentioned have been top notch...could you honestly say that Baines, Mori or Williams have had great seasons? Coleman is out so isn't included for the start of the season...as for Robles, I like him but Pickford and Butland would be available so its a no brainer to strengthen.

I think our defence has improved at set pieces but also with the midfielders having a lot of pace and power compared to Barry playing

I care more about the team and defense as a unit, so while I don't think any specific player has had a standout season, the point stands that assuming we continue to defend well as a team, we need to spend the money on goalscorers and creative players in midfield as that is our weakness vs. the current top 4.

I bet we'd be in the top 4 if we had one superstar attacking mid to support Lukaku (think Hazard, Sanchez, even Mertens), but I doubt we'd see much difference if we swapped in Tierney, Pickford and Keane.

Same was said about VVD stepping up, and Wanyama...

Will Hughes also looks like he would be an ideal 'Pienaar' type link player, him and Barkley would be mouth watering.

Pickford and Butland will be pushing one another for the England keeper jersey now...again an upgrade on robles.

I'd prefer English players to be signed and have a strong core...the very best sides have a strong English core

Not this year. Chelsea plays Cahill, and Victor Moses could be considered on that list although he represents Nigeria.

Sure Spurs have a strong English core but I would say they're the only one. Arsenal's English players aren't especially good and they don't have a "core" of English players in any sense which is also the case for both Manchester clubs.

Strong English core?! FFS

Number one, English teams have performed horribly in Europe so clearly the very best sides do not have an English core (Barcelona, Bayern, Real Madrid)

Secondly, let's just look at the premier league teams' reliance on English players:

Chelsea: Cahill is the only English player worth mentioning
Liverpool: Lalanna, Clyne and Milner are decent but none are their star players/core like Firmino, Coutinho and Mane
United: Collection of mediocre England substitutes who are behind the true core of Pogba, Ibrahimovic, etc.
Arsenal: few English players who are all garbage
City: sterling and John can't defend Stones are the ones worth mentioning, of course these are secondary to actual good players like Silva and Aguero
Spurs: I'll give you this one

I don't think quality is the problem, right now. It's age of our defender's. Either wrong side of 30 and not as quick as once was or very young lacking experience.

Neither Pickford or Butland are super keepers. Pickford, for some reason is massively over rated by fans on here.

Yeah they ate better then Stek but it's still too much money to spend on someone to upgrade the bench when we need to upgrade the first team players in more important areas such as the whole back 4.

So you advocate spending circa £20m on a goalkeeper who, you believe, Stoke may sell due to his injury record?
Tell me why again we therefore should be buying him?

People get carried away due to media hype when players represent the national sides, which might be OK if it's a top quality team like Germany, but England are terrible, from 1 to 11 they haven't got anyone that would get in the top European national sides

Is Pickford really an upgrade on Joel? Both good shot stoppers with the same weaknesses, in fact I've seen Joel perform well better than Pickford.
Butland is a wild card - been sidelined for a year or something now, hasn't he? Played 0 games this season, yet apparently any keeper seems to be better than what we have.

If Stoke are a team with a super keeper then why are they still turd? And Pickford - of course he looks amazing, he has to make roughly 97.4 saves a match because Sland are so crap. What's your fascination with keepers anyway?

No English side other than Spurs have a strong English core, mostly because English players are crap nowadays. Also Will Hughes is not all that.
