Leicester have rejected £20m offer from Roma for Riyad Mahrez, Sky in Italy reports.

The Foxes are asking for £30m after Mahrez handed in transfer request in May.

There will be a lot of interest in him at 30m, including us, if Swansea keep wanting 50m for siguardsson.

Imo any forward worth his salt will make the sweeper role obsolete with todays offside rules. I'd assume that's probably why it's rarely used in the top leagues these days if at all. Has the ball playing center back role not taken up this role in the sense of initiating counter attacks etc?

Think this summer is about bulking the squad out with good players of a level good enough to try and help us push on. We've signed 5 players (not including Onyekuru), 3 for good fees and we'll be making our money stretch this summer and making a few good investments. I'm sure another 2 or 3 will come in, maybe the likes of Sigurdsson & Giroud for good money and possibly another for good money and that'll be us.

But come next summer we won't be going out and trying to sign 6-7, 7-8 players, it'll more likely be around 2-3, 3-4 and the money will be there to make a big statement signing in money terms imo. This summer is about putting the money up and spending well but also making the money stretch to be able to improve the team/squad sufficiently. If we go out and spend £35-40m on a player, £50m on another & £65m plus on someone else, then we're not going to be able to sign much more are we, even with sales, IF we can get more players off of our books?!....

A defensive mid that drops between defenders like Barry, Busquets, Schneiderlin, Verratti etc. is the modern day sweeper. As you say, current offside laws make a sweeper irrelevant and frankly dangerous.

depends entirely on the CMs tbh, cruyff's total football approach continues to resonate

gueye likes a voyage forward, perhaps a defensive minded player behind him may free him up a bit

Koeman effectively had to work with this squad a season before gutting it like a salmon.

Mahrez has made it clear he wants CL and also told Leicester he wants out, key differences between him and Ciggy. He will go but I'm not convinced he will crack it in a top side.
