I wouldn't say no to the trophy. Handing a CL spot with it though demeans the trophy. That place is much more earned if its via a top finish in one of the top leagues.

How does it demean the trophy? It makes teams take the competition more seriously. In the past two seasons we've seen liverpool and man u both give up on the leauge in order to full concentrate on the europa lauge.

So according to you having man u in the champions leauge through winning the europa leauge is a bad thing but if you had it your way. There would be crap like koln or atlanta or lyon (who got beat by ajax in the europa leauge semis btw).

Bit of a myth this I reckon

How many times did we actually sell one of our best players under Moyes? Rooney, Lescott, Arteta, Pienaar, borderline Gravesen but not really at all, and then Rodwell was big money but barely played for us. Pienaar was Jan, Rooney and Arteta were deadline day and Lescott late

Ashley played some very good defending football for Swansea and peaked at the Euros captaining Wales. He has declined quite quickly though and his apparent propensity for eating all the pies has accelerated the decline
