Summer Transfer Window 2017

Remy isn't even of the type Koeman is after. Slimani or Pelle type on loan if we go down the loan route.
How do we know what type of striker we are after.

The manager had a set of players at Southampton and would have been operating on a certain limited budget,
Much the same as Everton prior to the last couple of windows in fact.
The manager would look at what was available to him and would decide what he could add that would get the best out of what was already there.

We have seen with RK how flexible he can be and as he has been able to assemble the squad almost completely we may all be wrong in assuming that he is going to reprise the role of a player like Pelle.

That's just not true. There is no range of data you or anyone can turn to that shows a non-financial elite PL club like us spending £30M with regularity for players in this window...and to other non-financial elite teams. The elite are in a position to exact such huge fees, but not those clubs.

Anyway, that debate is now I suppose for next week once all deals are done and we can see what's what.

Now is time for wondering who the hell we bring in as a striker.

The way I look at it, except for Sigi, we did what we needed to do to get the business done early. We had a very early start to the season and needed to have the bulk of the players in as soon as possible to allow them to bed in as best possible. If we make the group stages of the Europa league (as it looks like we will) this will be worth it since it may allow us to get a couple of players near the end of the window that perhaps wouldn't entertain coming without European football.

I'm glad we got the business done early, even if we did "overpay" a bit . Can you imagine going through the 5 games so far with last years squad only (even including a sulky Lukaku) and hoping to do all our business in the last week of window? The fume would be massive.

If you deal with elite clubs you put another minimum £10M on top.

I think we allowed ourselves to be positioned like that and fall into that trap this summer.

Anyway, who do you think we should or will get as a striker now that we've almost left it too late?

I think we are waiting till after tonight Dave, we have a few people lined up but they want to be sure that we are actually in the Europa League.

Theres no rumours, which means deals are in place, we get through tonight we start the deals, we go out tonight we look towards the B list.

If we go out tonight can we get a refund on some of those already bought? :coffee:

Yes, I agree. I suppose even the Euro Disney League can attract players of a certain ilk.

Agree and disagree: yes, undoubtedly it is good to get deals done early; however, I think we're seeing chickens coming home to roost now as we're chasing at least two and probably three players in crucial positions in the final week and we'll need more cash to do it properly.

We'll just have to wait and see what Moshiri has planned, I suppose.

Kenwright, Woods, etc aren't getting any younger and they still own a significant amount of shares. I have a feeling they're being kept there for a reason.
I am sure they will want to be part of the new stadium excitement.

It can attract a vast amount of players David, exposure and bigger off field deals for the players, its a massive draw.

But hey, dont take my word for it.

However, the former Ajax man says he would have thought twice about joining Tottenham if they had missed out on a European spot two years ago.

“I’d rather play in Europe than nothing,” said the Danish midfielder. “Of course there are many games but if you have a big squad like we have I think it shouldn’t be a disappointment to play in Europe. A lot of players want to be in Europe.

“Is it a factor when it comes to signing players? I think so, it would be for me personally. I don’t know if it is for anybody else but I think so. Of course that will probably help the team and the club as well [if we qualify].

The point is age is not a barrier to leading an attack. We shouldn't believe because he's 20 he cant do it. That's just daft.
No obviously, but for the exact same reason we shouldn't assume because players the same age or younger have done should mean he can. Players develop at different rates.

But if we hadn't done the earlier business wouldn't we need 6-7 players in the last week but have the same amount of money? Or is that you would rather have spent more on 2 or 3 world class players as opposed to the mass of slightly above average players (and potentially world class players) we have so far.

In reality, the only thing for certain is that the notion of value has left the building this window (after seemingly having done just that last window as well). I hope you're wrong about not having the money. Many will likely call me naive, but I still think that last summer was at least 50% down to a lot of big names not wanting to come. I'm hoping that after the game today (assuming we progress) we put in at least one massive bid for a game changer (either a CB or a striker).

Yep.

As soon as Lukaku left the first player through the door should have been a big statement signing of a CF to replace him.

Now...as a direct result of pursuing Sigurdsson so hard...we are in a very panicky situation casting round for a forward.

I would not be surprised if we did a loan deal now.
If we had waited till Rom was gone we'd have been bent over with the 90 m in our pocket.
We got the deals done early.
If we'd have tried to get Roms replacement in early then the selling club would have asked why do they want a striker when they have Rom.
Then the penny would have dropped and it would have been
They are going to get 90 m for Rom let's bend them over
Club went about our buisness the right way imo except Swansea renegaed on the agreed price.
Before we sold Rom we may been given encouragement that Giroud would be available and things changed.
We may still be in for him.
The money is there it's just a matter of the right player being available
