Yes you cant build a team from scratch in a season, however you can use common sense and see;

A -- You don't play 3 at the back against the master of this formation (Conte) who knows how to beat it

B -- If you sign a top keeper and centre back then you should ensure that another top centre back is signed or theres a huge gap

C -- Never have a 32 year old left back and only Cuco Martina as cover

D -- If you play 2 old centre backs and an old wing back then you will sit deep so start with a target man

I don't buy into this 'Striker is key' talk from Koeman. We need to improve the defence so we can play a high line...if not we will sit deep and need to play long balls all day long.
Good post. I've always thought you go with the old Cloughie adage, build a strong spine. To that end we needed a goalie, two centre halves and a striker, so far we've got a goalie and one centre half and we've spent £70 million on a couple of midfielders. Now we may get those players in but he's leaving it very late.

I'm gonna stick my knackers on the chopping block and say we will get Costa in one way or another by the close of this window.
We won't get Costa as he has set his heart on a return to Madrid,we won,t pay 45 million and a loan won,t be worth it as he is well out of shape at present and can join Madrid in January.
We need a centre forward that will be here long term to develop the team play,some one the team can trust to pass the bloody ball forward to and expect it to stick and cut out all the present back passing.
