Summer Transfer Window 2017

How is Martina a potentially bad signing? It makes complete sense. Seamus is out long term so we need cover. It allows Holgate to actually play in his proper position - CB, meaning we don't have to suffer with Jags & Williams paired together. Martina won't block Kenny's development - if Kenny is good enough Koeman will play him. It also means we don't have to blow a chunk of whatever summer transfer budget we might have.
Where is it stated that Southampton never offered him a new contract? Total speculation!
He's not a world beater, but I'd be fine with signing him. Gives us much needed RB cover and gives us back our most promising CB in Holgate.

Report on saints not offering him a contract.

Because he's not a very good footballer and we need to sign good footballers to progress, simple as that. The backup argument is moot as far as I'm concerned as Kenny can do that exact job until Seamus is fit.

Amazed people are trying to get on their high horse at anyone who doesn't deem this a sensible signing.

Davinson Sanchez ffs

He's very good Zat.

But, yesterday, he made a few very big mistakes which yes, he did recover from, but still showed his inexperience.

Don't think it helped that the movement in front of him was crap, but he was really slow on the ball as well.

Anyway, only 20, plenty of time to improve.

No surprise really. The long contract Shamus received always meant that a quality right back like Trippier wasn't realistic. The club was never going to spend a chunk of the budget on quality and also replicate two large wage outlays for one position.
RK obviously doesn't think Holgate is up to it at rb. Cuco clearly isn't very good if he's being released by Southamptom but, if he comes, maybe he'll be an adequate fill in until Shamus returns and hopefully JJ Kenny will get some opportunities also. It does all feel very Steklenberg like though.

I think it's more that Holgate will be first choice, and IF Martina comes, he'd purely be a squad player and back-up only. I'd personally like to see Kenny come in to the picture, but we'll see. I'm sure the manager will have his reasons should Martina arrive.

And if he does so, it's a very cheap deal relatively speaking. We don't need a 'long term' replacement for Seamus, so it was never going to be a case of signing a Tripier (who won't come anyway as he'll likely be first choice at Spurs next season) or whoever.

Fair enough. Stand corrected on that.
Either way, Martina was cover for Southampton, I don't have a problem having him as cover here for the reasons I said.

Not on a high horse at all, I've got a reasonable side to why I think this does make sense. Does it excite me? Christ no! But does it make sense, absolutely. If he ends up being backup to Kenny then great.
You say "we need to sign good footballers to progress" and i totally agree, but we're not about to buy someone incredible for every position on the pitch. Regardless of what money we may/may not have we can only shell out a certain amount and we need to use that in the most needed areas - Rom/Ross replacement/backup, GK etc. I don't see RB as somewhere we need to spend a fortune as a priority

ask yourself would anyone in the top 6 sign martina as back up. he utter crap and its a signing (if it happens) that shows we're still stuck in the smalltime mentality from the moyes era

this thread is an abomination.

He has not even signed yet and people are already starting on him.

We deserve no one.

If he is free and is a back up. No problem.

We need to spend money in more important areas. We need GOALS.

Same people questioning why Ross wants out.

It does strike me as a very Lars Jacobsen-type signing

Nobody in the six teams above us would consider bringing Martina in as cover

I understand the reasoning, we don't want a really quality player who would stand in the way of Kenny and/or Holgate's development

I'd second that , but right now he looks very ponderous
