@catcherintherye @BlueToff

You both have opposite opinions on Cuco Martina...here's mine for what it's worth...

Firstly, hes absolute rubbish and shouldn't even be close to our club let alone given a shirt. The only reason I think to sign such a hopeless excuse of a 'premier league' player is to be backup to Kenny.

I think that this means 3 things;

1 -- Kenny will start the season at right back and Martina will hopefully not get a single minute on the pitch because if he does it will be Coleman vs Sporting part 2 (albeit on the right).

2 -- Holgate will be moved into the centre.
A- If he is a starter it means we've been lied to about the club having serious money or were playing a back 3 (which makes sense because Martina cant defend so would be wing back cover and not such a liability
B- We will be moving out Jagielka and Mori so Holgate will be 3rd choice or rotating in/out which would be good
C- Browning will be sold / Connolly sold or loaned. Both are better than Martina though.

3 -- We will know by the length of contract, if its 1 year then ok he's just cover for Kenny and we may well be playing 3 at the back or offloading Jags and Mori or both. If its 2 years or more then its a ridiculous signing really as weve waited so long to move on deadwood then to sign this clown just beggars belief.

if this means Kenny starts games and is given a breather while Martina plays wingback in some 'easy' games and it allows Holgate to become 3rd choice centre back rotating in for some games where opponents don't play long ball (Europa) then its 'ok'.

Still, I cant believe we don't just use Connolly as cover for half a season as hes got to be better than Martina. Unless he's cover for Baines?

If it's going to be;

Coleman/Kenny/Martina
Baines/Connolly
Holgate 3rd choice centre back

Then I think that's ok....

Not that I've seen, but I think he'd suit the way we play - would help immensely having someone big in this team who can trap and hold up the ball, and present a real aerial threat, especially away at top opposition. Was brilliant at doing that when he was here before

...I don't think anybody would argue but it's a bit of a pointless discussion because I doubt he'll be leaving United, especially as Mourinho appears to like him.

But, how much do spend on someone better than Martina ? ..5m, 10m, 15m... we are signing a reserve full back because Seamus will be back for the second half of the season, so we need to decide how much we can afford to spend when we also need cover at left back, need a centrehalf, need a creative midfielder and certainly need at least one striker and possibly a wide player as well.

The manager promoted Lookman, Davies, DCL and Holgate.
If he doesn't move Kenny into the first team it will be because he believes he isn't ready.
However, Martina, if he signs, is a free transfer and probably not on colossal wages. It's not as if he has to be promised first team football to sign as he will come knowing that he is already second choice at least. Kenny will get his chance in preseason and it is up to him to take it then.

Without claiming to know how good Kenny and Connolly are, I can categorically state that both are better than Martina.

Awful at Twente, awful at Southampton...

We have England u20's starting full backs in our squad...they should be adequate cover for Coleman compared to this guy who I think is terrible and a guaranteed liability

He still has a lot to learn defensively as well. And no, it isn't just one game he's made mistakes in.

As I said, he's 20. He's going to make mistakes, of course. And he will improve and is already good and if we did sign him, I'd be delighted.

But please Zat, you go overboard with most players under the age of 23.

Was impressed by Veltman.

Which games would you say he's made serious mistakes in? This year he's been exceptional for them and got them out of a lot of situations, even look at last night where he came back at the end to save a certain goal.

Veltman? He's not a patch on Sanchez...if a 2nd defender it would be De Ligt whose very good but has lapses as hes just 17.

You also make yourself look a bit silly on about u23 players, its not about age, its about quality.

He made a few errors in the semi-final IIRC, one or two in the quarters.

I'm not saying he's not good or that I wouldn't be delighted if we signed him, but let's just reign it in a bit? He's a 20-year-old who has had one season in Europe in a relatively poor league. He's been very impressive but he's not yet a world-beater.

This.

But the fact remains, we need a big squad. Honestly, most people just can't help a whinge.

He's coming in (if he does so) as cover for Seamus who is out until 2018.

Holgate isn't a right-back. He's done very well there but he's a CB and his best games have come when played as the RCB in a three-man defence. He will still be utilised at right-back but Martina gives us a different option at the least.

Same goes for Kenny. The lad has just turned 20 and has played two PL games - both sub appearances. He looks the part but it would be a risky move to have all the pressure on two young lads heading into a season where we could - and should - be aiming to play well over 50 games.

This is common sense. Please people, get a grip.

Very good saying it's cover for Coleman mate, but the reality is he's out for the first half of the season bare minimum, which means this lad will play and start a lot of games, and he's been entirely shown up at this level, hence why he can't get into the saints side and they want shut of him.

I don't think we are discussing the same player here...he was fabulous In both legs of the semi final and saved 2 certain goals in the second leg.

I don't think ive said he's a 'world beater', ive said that if he came to everton he would be our best defender and his potential is insane and could be world class in the future -- ive not said hes world class now.

Sounds like your job has gone to your head a bit

What would you do?

A -- Kenny/Martina
B -- Kenny/Holgate
C -- Kenny/Connolly
D -- Kenny/New signing

D for me - a short term replacement who will also push Coleman when he's back. A Zabaleta or a Sagna.
If we are genuinely looking at becoming a top 6 side we need better than Martina

Yes, but relax. It's May and the majority of rumors are made up.
The last bit is definitely true. People told me to relax all of last summer too, then told me how awesome it was that we spent over £30m quid on Bolasie and Williams. Cuco isn't good enough for our current squad, he's hardly part of the solution to cracking the top 6.
