People seem to overlook the fact that to get an assist you must have someone bagging after past the pass/cross.

We spurned plenty of chances last season. Siggurdson rounding the goalkeeper and having it blocked on the line denies Bernard an assist.

Anyone who watches football enough can recognise Everton were a better team last season with Bernard in it.

Pienaar was crap infront of goal and not great at getting tonnes of assists but his link up with Baines meant between him and Baines they'd contribute enough. Do we really think Digne creates as many chances as he did without a solid AML to link up with? no.

No he doesn't but Bernard is far from the only one that can do it.

And there are stats that measure creativity without factoring in finishing and guess what Bernard is still average. The only thing that can save him is that the strikers were so poor that he couldn't create but that's hard to square with Digne being the second best fullback in the league by the same metrics. Unfortunately Bernard was pretty ordinary last year if you're looking for production from him and not skill and giving him credit for what Digne did.

His ability to hold onto possession under pressure is very valuable too - great tool for taking players out the game and opening up space for others to exploit.

Bernard loses the ball more often, has fewer shots per game and fewer successful crosses per game than Barnes.

He has 2 goals and 3 assists in 36 appearances in all competitions. At 26. Barnes has 10 goals and 8 assists in 45 appearances in all competitions. At 21. He was called back to Leicester after being one of the best players in the Championship and continued that form in the Prem in the 2nd half of the season.

Personal preference, I'd rather take a chance on a kid who I think will play for England, as opposed to Bernard who's ceiling (in my opinion) isn't too far from where he is now.

But you're not comparing apples with apples. You're saying "look at Barnes' stats in an inferior league for half the season" and then using that with a stick to beat Bernard with.

If you're going to bring in non-associated stats to back up your point, answer the following about Harvey Barnes:

How many appearances in the CL?
How many goals?
How many assists?
How many international caps?
How many international goals?
How many league championships won?
How many domestic cups won?
How many international competitions won?

the answer, by the way, to all of these is ZILCH.

The answer to all of the above in relation to Bernard is more than zilch.

ahh imagine the fume when Liverpool sign him and he's absolutely boss

Yup. I buzz on the awkwardness in here sometimes. I don't like seeing our club fall further behind that lot though. Might never have had an interest and he needs to stay with Flamengo til his 18th birthday doesn't he so wouldn't be one for right now in any case. They can prob afford 40mil to do that. We can't.
