Think Everton had to do this, given the 2 players were named. There is every chance they will both still be around next season, you can’t just throw them under the bus.

why or why would we make that statement???

One of two reasons.

Firstly, the Echo may have complained about being fed false info and told the club to rectify their reputation, whilst Sky got the real story and went for it.

Or Sky genuinely made it up, it's completely false and, again, the club have released the statement to either protect the Echo OR to keep a lid on it whilst negotiations with Palace continue.

I can't see any other reason. We don't as a rule comment on transfers as a club - it's extremely rare we do.

Like I've said, if Brands has just randomly offered to smash our transfer record and then give in after one bid on a player that would definitely improve us, it's weird.
