I’d love it if we enforced all our contracts to be a base wage and then just a ton of achievable bonuses on top of it. That would be one way of surviving another situation like this.
Indeed. But not sure how many actual good players we’d attract with a policy like that!
I think Spurs do something similar, lower base wages but bulked up substantially with bonuses

Well it’s one of them, I mean it would never work, but let’s just say everyone picked as a first team member get says £40k as a base wage. Then get £Xk added on every week for thinge like picked for the squad, started the game, goals, assists, clean sheets, even just improving from the week before.

Then have it so that the wage you can achieve is really competitive. Wouldn’t matter if you’re an expensive import (Sigurdsson) or a 17-year old academy lad - if you’re performing you’re the highest earner.

Would certainly help shift/motivate people like Schneiderlin that can either sit on £40k, move to another team or try harder to get the better wage.

Again, this would never ever happen.

How long has Schneiderlin got left on his contract out of interest?

They did operate that a while back, but their key players were all lobbed massive wages over the last year or two. Son was the latest, iirc.

The "big 5" I'm looking forward to Marcel punting into the Mersey are Mirallas, Bolasie, Sandro, Schneiderlin and Williams. Williams at least is definitely gone, he'll do bloody well to shift the other 4.
Let's add the dirt five McCarthy, Besic, Martina, Jagielka and Stekelenberg too.

Striker > CM > #10 or play Lookman there > Gana Replacement(?) > Right winger if Vlasic is not considered > RB in terms of signing priority.
Striker being the most important and RB being the least, Yeah we could sign CB replacements but I'd be surprised if we do, Just swap Zouma for Holgate or something.

Sounds amazing and I'd love it. But you're right, will never happen.

One of the biggest problems Brands has had, and will have, is our older, mediocre players on the most lucrative contracts they're ever going to get being unwilling to leave it behind and actively push for the move. The players we bring in, as we did in the last summer window, have to be 25 or under with room to earn a better contract if they perform as expected and if not they will still have resale value due to still being a decent age and aren't scaring off interested clubs because we've given them stupidly high wages that they can't match.
