People act like turning 30 makes him crocked. The fact that it’s Manchester United and PSG that are after him tells you everything you need to know. If there was a readily available better replacement, then United and PSG would just go for them instead.

We will struggle if we needlessly sell Gueye this summer, and I will be particularly miffed if we bend over and hand our best player over to Manchester United once again, especially with them becoming an awful midtable outfit. It will be so annoying if we struggle once again next season, and people highlight the sale of Gueye as being a key contributor, only for people to respond “Yeah, but he was 30 years old. We absolutely had to sell”. We don’t, and we shouldn’t.

It also gives you an indication of the boards priority if he is sold as well. Selling your best player just to get a few extra million when the league is awash with money. There has been no change at board level at all if we sell Gueye this summer.
No what that tells us is PSG& UTD who spend 100mil on some of their players, are quite happy to take a 30mil hit on a player who will give them 2/3yrs. It’s not a big loss to them.

And who is it working for? Us or them?

I'm not saying it works particularly well for any party. Just that it's what happens.

We get a hugely profitable return on our investment buthave to find a replacement.
They overpay for another megastar who may or may not feature in their 1st team.

Absolutely, completely and utterly, entirely correct!

Think the Rabiot rumour is rubbish released by his agent to put pressure on United... Can't see us bringing in Sosa, Gomes and Rabiot even if Gana was to go that'd be a whole new midfield plus assuming Sosa is to play then where does Siggy fit in if we've Gomes, Rabiot and Sosa as our MF three? Nice that we're getting linked to such players but think it's his agent drumming up hype

Sosa wouldn’t be starting if we had rabiot, Gomes and sig.

If we sell gana I expect us to buy another midfielder even if we tie up deals for sosa and gomes.

The likelihood of Gueye’s replacement being better than Gueye is slim; that’s why the elite clubs are targeting Gueye and not his eventual replacement at Everton.

We’ve heard all of these arguments in the past. They were last made about Lukaku, whose sale sent us back years and we still haven’t come anywhere close to finding an adequate replacement. They were also made about Lescott and Stones etc etc, and we got nowhere through selling them to our rivals.

I’m the last person to get overly attached with players, but it simply doesn’t make sense to needlessly sell Gueye this summer, not if you aim to do something more than finish 8th next season.

All fair points, but Lukaku, Stones and Lescott weren't 30 - we could have kept each of them for another 3 or 4 years and still made a fortune

(Not convinced we ended up particularly worse off by bringing Distin in for Lescott btw - we just wasted the rest of the money on Bilyaletdinov and Heitinga, but that's a debate for another day)

Plus, again, do we trust that the DoF system we have in place now enables us to replace more adequately than in the past? If we do, we shouldn't be overly concerned. If we don't, then fair enough.

Also think the clubs who are targeting Gueye should tell you a lot - United, whose transfer activity has been shambolic and PSG whose own transfer activity has been less-than-impressive. He fits a model of player they both think they need. It's not particularly clever IMO

The idea that Gana cant be replaced for less than 50-60 million is absurd, because if that was true, someone would pay 50-60 million for him.

There are a dozen DMs that will be transferred for 10 million this window, that by next summer will be worth the exact same as Gana.
And there'll be plenty more who are transferred for £20m who by next summer will be worth half that, which is why people are concerned at the thought of him going. People saying 'it's a no brainer' appear to be missing the rather crucial point that this is only the case if we replace him with someone as good or better. If we sign another Klaassen or whoever that completely flops then we find ourselves going backwards. Again.

If he goes he goes, and of course it might work out very well for us. Everyone who's talking about it as if there's no downside though, is utterly bonkers.

That's kinda my point too, why bring in all 3? Especially when Gana, as it stands, is still here, not to mention Davies, Schneiderlin, Beningame and McCarthy. Just seems odd that we're bringing 3 MFs (2 gaurenteed starters) in unless Gana and two of the above leave

Absolutely. The downside is not replacing him properly. You have to trust that Brands does this, otherwise we are significantly weaker.
