The free agent list on Transfermarkt looks noticeably worse than it did a couple of weeks ago, and no doubt in a couple of weeks there will be practically no quality available on a free whatsoever.

I see Aaron Martin, the Spanish left back who was tentatively linked, has joined recently promoted Genoa on a free. Good goals and assists stats last season, plays in a position we need to strengthen, obviously not demanding too much given the team he has joined and has got plenty of experience yet is a great age at 26...

If we aren't making obvious moves like that then the financial situation is bad beyond comprehension or we are getting ready to make the same mistakes all over again.

That squad is relegated by March.
I know some players are still on extended break and we still have several weeks to improve the squad but lets not beat around the bush... that group of players that have flown off today doesn't survive another season.
I'm not even being dramatic or hysterical when I say, that group of players would struggle to survive in the Championship.

Yes you are. It’s the same squad that didn’t get relegated minus Mina, Coady and a couple of fringe players. Mina was good when fit but he wasn’t the difference between a PL squad and a League One squad. The squad is nowhere near good enough to comfortably survive in the PL, this we know, but don’t go overboard.

Has anybody worked out how we're more skint this year than last?

I'm struggling to compute how selling Anthony Gordon, Moise Kean, ISS, Ellis Simms, Nkounkou and waving goodbye to 310k a week of salaries (Mina, Coady, Vinagre, Davies, Townsend, Begovic) means we somehow have less money than before?
I’m guessing, but I assume we’re (sensibly enough) trying to reduce our unsustainable wages/turnover ratio, which means a decent chunk of that wage cut won’t be replaced.

As for the spending side of things, we may have less wiggle room than we thought because of the latest accounts/run rate and/or we may have a heads up on any incoming fine in October that we’ve had to set aside cash for.

Doesn’t really matter the minutiae, the short answer is “because we’ve consistently been a catastrophically run business for the last 7-8 years”

Even if it's on loan it's a good thing - reports that the great Marcel Brands negotiated a genius contract to give him an auto-rise to £75k/wk is frightening - we need to get this kind of dead weight off the bill
I said it yesterday, but this was around the time we gave Holgate that contract. It’s a bad contract with hindsight but probably made sense at the time, when he actually looked good.

For me the bigger issue than the contract he’s on is why so many players who look hugely promising at a young age go on to nothing but mediocrity at this club. Poor and constantly changing coaching? An air of complacency about the place?

Bro. Big Ash Young is coming, what more could you want?
