Summer transfer window 2023

It's because he isn't very good. As I said in one of my original posts, he's fast and works VERY hard defensively. I worry that this is going to be our thing now - ignoring attacking output in favour of hard running. Good to have hard running, but not at the expense of scoring goals.

He's still young and, if we sign him, I really hope he proves me wrong, but I think the club signs players based on what would be the easiest deals to do and not who are the best we might attract.

I really want Harrison if I’m honest, I think for what we need - an established PL player who will add goals and assists, the quality gap between him and Elanga is vast (based on what I’ve seen of Elanga, which is limited) and the price not so much.

But look, I would have said the same about McNeill and Cornet last year.

I'm not even sure it is just the DoF. Dan Purdy seems to have been stinking the club out for years, left, came back and is stinking it out again.

We always prioritise PL players and have done for years, I suspect the common denominator in that thinking must be him. Why is that attitude so persistent??

I can see the frustration with that. But we signing untried and untested players doesn’t guarantee success. Onana, Patterson and Mykolenko are the ones we’ve signed in recent times. None of them have exactly been outstanding successes so far.

The club is clearly petrified of relegation first and foremost - and the safest way to avoid that is to have players you are reasonably certain can cut it at this level. With our budget, we kind of need that certainty

Well that just it mate. He didn’t compile this squad. 7 managers and 3 DoFs did. It’s a mess that can’t be undone over night or even in 2 transfer windows. We’ve got crap players on big contracts and no FFP wriggle room. Most of which predates Thelwell.

If you look at what he’s added to the squad, he’s really not the problem. Maupay is the only one I’d say was a genuine flop.

Tarkowski, McNeil, Coady and Gana all made good contributions to us surviving.

The hatred towards thelwell seems quite misdirected to me. People seem to think he’s genuinely sitting on couch made up of £100m in £5 notes and smoking weed while everyone else is doing transfers.

How are people defending a DOF who let us go two windows with just Maupay as a fit striker. The nugget was a huge part of the reason we nearly went down

Tarkowski, Onana, Vinagre, Garner, Mcneil, Maupay, Coady

At any one time, 5 of those players were in the first 11. The other player didn't get a sniff because he was that crap.

Nearly half of that team is under his watch and the quality is fkin abysmal.

There's a big loan market out there, he seems incapable of using it properly. What little money we had to spend has been massively hit and miss and once again I'm having to say this for about the 45th time since the end of the season but we were 33 minutes away from relegation.

But anyway, you cut him some slack if you want and we'll catch up again in a few months if we are in the same position.

Tarkowski played every minute of every game and led the league in some key areas.

Onana is a kid who we will sell for a handsome profit and contributed well.

Garner spent almost the entire season injured and then played really well in the run in.

Gana did Gana things and also pretty much led the league in recoveries.

Coady was fine when he played.

McNeil contributed with vital goals and assists in some of our biggest games and got better and better as the season went on.

None of these guys were the problem or the reason we were down where we were.

Maupay we all know was a flop and a panic signing - no argument. But he was signed to either backup or accompany DCL who sadly was out way longer than we hoped.

Vinagre I couldn’t care less about. Backup LB for emergency only. A body.

Anyway - I’m not arguing that we have a good team, we all know we’re not where we want to be. But for the most part thelwell’s signings demonstrably improved us or at very least made significant contributions to the team. Would you rather have had Keane and Godfrey at CB all season? And Tom Davies centre mid?

Even with Elanga I’d still like the 3 Leeds lads to be honest, especially if we are selling Gray (which we should).

I think those 3 for what’s reported represent good value and we’d make good profit on them if needed I think.

I don’t like it but I think we’re gambling on a late loan for a striker in the misguided hopes that Calvert Lewin stays fit. I think I understand why they think it but I disagree, they’re not gonna spend £20m for a centre forward when Calvert Lewin is there “worth £30m+” because they think one would be wasted on the bench, when I think the reality is we should be treating Calvert Lewin as someone who’s not available because of his injury history.

He’s Mina, if he’s fit he’s the clear and obvious first choice and is an unbelievable fit for the team and system we wanna play, however he simply can’t be relied upon.

For me that’s the strongest case against Thelwell but doesn’t tell the whole story, as it assumes he had money to spend and chose not to use it.

Maupay he got wrong and we’d have spent the money better on someone else. But boss strikers for £15m are hard to find.

January was a mess but what I’m mainly reacting to is the idea that thelwell just isn’t arsed and hasn’t tried to sign anyone.
He clearly has targets in mind - but they didn’t come off in January. One of them seemingly gave us his word and then binned us off for a team who barely used him and he’s now giving us the come to bed eyes again.

If you carry on you may get a spot on the Everton board of directors.
