I'm not really sure he would be taking a paycut as such.
Utd will have to make up the difference for 2 years. They are contractually obligated to ensure he is paid that amount.
Let's say if he stayed at Utd for 2 more years, there is no way he would be able to command anywhere near what he is on, if he moved, or got a new contract.
So it's not entirely unfeasible for someone to say we will give you £100k for 4 years, with utd making up his wages for the first 2 years.

I don't want him though. Yes decent player, and had a bad time at utd. But our defence would just be too slow, unless we went with a 3 at the back

Oh if its a loan, sure. But a perm? No way we could match his Utd coin.

Can’t wait to swap Branthwaite for Maguire and then in 2 years, be struggling to replace both CBs having watched Maguire be a liability the whole time.

While also reading posts on here by those currently advocating a deal about how we make bad deals and let our young players go without giving them a chance and not getting good enough value for them.

We are talking about the England captain Vs a player who has had a 3/4 of a season in Holland, is sub for the u21s and got a stupid red the last time he played. No guarantees he makes it in the premier league.

I can see a bit of potential in branthwaite but we would be so solid with McGuire playing next to Tarks.

Even if Branthwaite actually ends up warranting the Godfrey like hype, it’s still going to take him 2 or 3 years for him to develop, at which point we will promptly sell him on anyway.

Our defence needs to be strengthened right now, not in two years time via the inevitable sale of Branthwaite should he actually turn into the player he’s being hyped up to be.

Up there with any of the worst posts this forum has ever witnessed.

Take a bow.
If it wasn’t for the situation we are in as a football club right now I’d agree with you.
But, Branthwaite isn’t the finished article and we (probably) don’t have the funds to spend big on a CB.
Therefore it is a good swap (if that’s what is being implied) for our desperate circumstances….
Promising players aren’t going to keep us in the premier league next season unfortunately…

Was Coady or is Keane really much better than Branthwaite is likely to be? He is 21 and has played at the lower prep levels to get the opportunity. At some point the team has to stop wanting mediocre or worse Premier League experienced options over young talent they have that needs a chance. Will he make some errors? Probably. So does Keane. Play him.
