Gyokeres is a better player and has scored 38 in 2 seasons.

Massively. Cov fans knew last season was their big chance, and if they failed they’d be starting next season with a different look to the squad. We forget that having £12m change from replacing their talisman with Simms is a colossal amount of cash for clubs like Cov (who manage to make our financial management look sane over the last 2 decades). But they are hugely weakened as a result.

Whether he would have made it in the PL is now anyone’s guess, but in terms of goals, plus assists, plus just occupying defences, Gyokeres was maybe the most impactful player in the division for me last year. Defo more exciting pacey strikers about clearly, but in terms of overall contribution to matches and points generation he was exceptional, hence the price tag. Would be great if Simms stepped up for them to be fair, but looks very much a case of “found his level”. Good luck to him.

Right Back
Given that Coleman has been given a new deal and we already have Patterson, I’m guessing that the Right Back position will now wait until January / next summer. Such a shame because neither SC or NP are able starters right now; would’ve been great to bring in Walker-Peters with Patterson gaining PL experience as his back up, and let Coleman retire gracefully.

Wide Positions
I originally had us down as keeping Gray due to lack of wide options, but looks like the Saudi money will be too good to turn down. It does leave us incredibly short in the wing positions; I expect to see Iwobi & maybe young Mills playing here until we’re able to bring players in.

I’m therefore expecting us to bring in:
1. Starting Quality CB
2. Starting Quality LB
3. Starting Quality RW
4. Starting Quality ST
5. Young Prospect LW
6. Young Prospect RW

Then in January, look to find a starting RB & a young prospect GK.

Then next Summer, look to replace Doucoure & Gueye.

When is patterson meant to play he has already been backup at rangers and here, only way be will get better now is games. Also we should be looking for the cm for gueye now him dacoure and iwobi could be off for the acon.

Yeah, Simms hasn't got another level to move to, what you see is what you got, he won't move up a level now.
Like I previously mentioned, Simms is one of those lads big for his age in youth level so stood out, and you expect you have a player on your hands. but he hasn't improved at all since, cos he had already hit his peak then. ( the same reason Haaland got ignored by alot of teams earlier in his career. the scouts thought with his size he had already hit that peak. Except he's the player that proves the theory wrong..
Whereas Simms proves it can be right.

Has Simms proved it right? I feel like if you thought he couldn't step up when he was 17 and then he stepped up several times he's proved it wrong even if he's never a top flight player. He didn't flame out after the u18s.

He only did well when he had the Loch Ness Drogba (Ross Stewart) up top with him playing in a 2. When Stewart got injured and Simms was on his own he looked lost most of the time.

I mean 3 of his 7 goals when Stewart wasn't on the pitch. I'm not going to act like I've seen every minute but not sure that passes a basic smell test.

Gray will surely be around for the opening few games otherwise the club is leaving itself even more ridiculously short upfront than last season which would take some doing.

I assume players can still move to Saudi Arabia on August 31st so it will probably happen then or in the week leading up to deadline day.

Dyche didn't play Gray much and he won't play off a wing as he doesn't track back enough for Dychey, so given there's a few team's in for him I think he will go too and a Harrison or Gnoto comes in...

Yes, I think having someone competent ahead of Patterson would allow him to play with less pressure; similar to how Coleman came through the ranks. Especially given that we need to replace Coleman soon anyway, we’d be better off buying a first teamer rather than another young prospect.

As for CM, Doucoure might not be in the AFCON squad. A loan move in the window for a CM might be the way forward to cover Gueye & Iwobi.
