My dad's a Wolves fan. Having given up taking me (deeming me a curse and person no grata at the start of the 80s), he took my younger brother instead. I remember my bother coming home grinning, stifling his laughter and bursting at the seems to tell me something. Apparently frustrated at a decision my dad stood up and hurled "linesman, you're a c***" towards whoever was running the line, followed by hundreds of heads in the family enclosure turning in his direction. Obviously told not to mention that at home straight after. This is what football is all about surely.

As my old man said when I first went to the game:

"You'll hear words at the match you won't usually hear. Don't repeat them anywhere but here, and never tell your mother." That's the logic I've passed onto mine.

Same with me mate, difference is I would have to tell my lad not to tell his mum that it was me swearing my head off till I was red in the face.

My wife is a Yank and it blew her mind that our fans can be so angry and spiteful to our own players. She wont ever go to another game. I live in Canada now, North American sports are all about family values and fun. It’s great but a franchise will never be a real team so the spirit isnt in it. Im torn between the passion of anger and swearing and a great wholesome day out watching sport.

The pursuit of ‘wholesome’ is what’s killing the game. Every single touch being a foul and every foul being a yellow is also symptomatic.

And that word was .... love.

Not sure thats true, it’s a family game but the fans get crazy. Isnt like that at the rugby either. It’s something about football fans. The soft players and weak fouls are a symptom of an increase in skill. I mean, look at the state of these ultra light pink boots they all wear. Hahaha.
