Well its big sporting day tomorrow for Serbs, Djokovic plus they are in final of basketball World Cup (basketball is big there), added bonus that America is out (usual favorites).

When ex-Yugoslavia collapsed, we (Croats) inherited football, they inherited basketball plus they got Djokovic (something that still hurts considering how basketball used to be popular here)

Was the great Yugoslavian football team of the 1990s mostly Croats? I guess you had Stojkovic, Savicevic, Jugovic, Pancev from Serbia. Prosinecki, Boban, Suker, Jarni, Boksic from Croatia. I've probably forgotten loads of other players but what a great group of players that was.

Yeah, we finished third in World Cup 98, lost semis against France 2-1 (after we took the lead) with Lilian Thuram scoring his only two goals in 120 something games he played for France.

France beat us in two most important games of our history, semis 98 and finals 2018. We got decent record against every other big European team like Italy, Germany, Spain, England, Netherlands, France on other hand is our boogeyman

Re: McEnroe: sure, but he defined to do it well. I'm not sure I agree with respect to Federer. I had never seen anything like it.

I question your dismissal of the entire tour. I think Masters 1000 matches matter. You're free to disagree.

I think your belief in your metric is deeply questionable. You are welcome to disagree. It's a reasonable position in the bar/pub discussion. I land on the same spot in men's tennis, though I would disagree with your reasoning. If you want to call out Western sports media as narrative hacks, I'm not inclined to argue. If you want to call them out for trumpeting Federer on Slam wins until the rationale vanished, I'm with you there.

All of that said, the line that sticks with me is the Nike commercial they aired right after Federer hit fifteen. McEnroe, being McEnroe, said, "Thanks, Roger, for making the rest of us look average."

Typically hilarious McEnroe, but it also hit upon the truth. Slams do matter. It wasn't what mattered, with respect to Federer. He made everyone that came before look average. The way he did it was what became legend.
Yes, biut on Federer: regardkless of the degrading of Novak's achievements to reach 23 GS titles, no one talks of Federer these days as the best player of all time. They cant go there and claim that withoiut looking ridiculous when there's a man still sweeping up GS titles to the tune of 23 and probably 24 tomorrow.

So, while he's being denied his due, Djokovic's GS haul has chopped off at the legs all talk of anyone else being though of serioulsy as the best ever.

Djokovic hasn't really had a challenge in his prime. Federer had Nadal bearing down on him his entire career and vice versa.

Stan Wawrinka at just 6' tall is an amazing blip for his slam wins Aus 14, French 15, US 16. Murray (6'3") has only* 3 slams also (5 Aus final losses - ouch)

Murray won two Olympics too. I know they aren't classified as Grand Slams but I bet Federer and Djokovic would have liked one. Maybe Djokovic will get one next year
Olympics are for western bias and hate mongering msm consumers or something...
