Tennis is cheap. All you need to supply is a proper racket, which costs about as much as proper boots, and a sleeve of tennis balls. An asphalt court and a net aren't all that pricy, either. Lots of schools and parks on this side of the pond make them publicly available for free.
Good tennis instruction is expensive, for some reason. If you know someone who will teach you, then you're good. Otherwise, it's posh.
