Dan, you're the only one who mentioned Kirkby.

(I haven't re-read the whole thread, so if I'm wrong, apologies).

As you know, the membership were polled regarding Kirkby discussion - it emerged the majority found it tedious and wanted it closing. Hardly surprising.

As I said, as most Evertonians do, hes trying to put a positive spin on us not winning f all. We all do it. Loads of fans on here and throughout the football world praise the way we have gone about things. It doesn't warrant another thread to slam anyone concerning destination Kirkby. Scrutinise every word. Any excuse ay...

Yawn.

I dont know what the issue is here. Do we all have to read from the same hymn sheet on stadium moves, transfer activity, the behaviour of the board, commercial performance? I mean, this feller IS one of the most powerful CEO's in Britain and an Evertonian who commented that we needn't be arsed about winning because we have dignity. Should that just slide by without comment?

The man hasn't got a clue about the history of the club he supports. He needs to get his head out of his bank statements and realise that 'Only the Best is Good Enough' is a mission statement, not a punchline on one of his tins of baked beans.

Maybe if the Kirkby thread was opened up any 'excuse' to have a go at him and his DK friends wouldn't quickly surface?

Yes, you're wrong. ""

Cynically, yes, you could see that angle. Less cynically though....

“Everton do not have a sugar daddy and it may be just as well they don’t. What they have is a strategy that can be sustained. To have one mega-rich owner or investor would put at risk the ethos of the club and give too much influence to someone who may be there one day and gone the next.

Whats wrong with that? Very valid point. One key attribute affiliated with our 'success' in recent years is stability, or Sir Terry Leahys word "strategy that can be sustained". In other words, not sacking Moyes for a poor season - our worst in PL history in fact, like Man City, Newcastle, Tottenham etc all have. One key attribute affiliated with Man City, Newcastle, Tottenhams failure in recent years is investment bringing instability - Martin Jol at Spurs not being given a chance for example.

“I often feel Everton supporters are the happiest in football. The teams above them get spoiled by money and weight of expectation. Others clubs exist in fear for their survival. They all envy what Everton have achieved and how they’ve gone about it. That means more than winning trophies."

Again, theres not much wrong with that. Wern't we all saying how subdued all the other FA Cup Semi Final sides supporters were? - We all put it down to there fans being used to it. After winning an FA Cup Semi Final - our fans were the happiest in football. Could the same be said about Chelseas? As I said, envy was perhaps the wrong word, he clearly meant 'respect' and hes spot on, world football respects what Everton have done with limited resources as a football club. His last line about winning trophies is clearly bollocks and deluded - but a lot of fans in Liverpool constantly spin that type of argument to our lovable neighbours.

Didn't realise you knew the man well enough to make such an assumption...

So Everton fans are happy? We would be a darn sight happier if the manager had a lot more money to play and we were kicking the arse out of that top four. So give over with that bleeding bullshit that we would lose the club ethos if we had a rich owner.

I want some multi billionaire to buy our club, I do not care who as long as he sticks a pile of money into the cluib for Moyes to buy top players and fund a new stadium outside of Kirkby.

So again I ask give over with that sanctimonious crap that some of you come out with about the club being okay and we don't need a rich owner.

As for Leahy, basically he was saying to BK do not spend any more dosh on players as you need the money for your share of the cost of the Kirkby stadium.

Agree to an extent Rob - but there would always be an element of concern to being a billionaires plaything - because make no mistake, thats what we would be.

Why would that necessarily follow, though? Was Leahy thinking of City and Mark Hughes? Clearly not. Villa and O'Neill? No. And let's face it, as we know, in terms of an owner having too much say so, that doesn't necessarily mean they need to be mega rich does it? Kenwright isn't mega rich, but would anyone deny he has unchecked influence on the club's affairs? No. Is he threatening the 'ethos' of the club by sticking us on a retail park out of town? Many would say yes.

But his point was that winning isn't everything - in fact, it's not even the primary aim...something which you yourself have said here is 'bollocks' - and I agree with you. It was indefensible what he said in that passage. Indefensible and clearly demonstrating how much out of whack he is with supporters.

Didn't realise you knew the man well enough to make such an assumption...

Well clearly he hasn't got a conception of Everton's history, otherwise the baked beans magnate would realise Everton were the Mersey Millionaires who built the modern era of the club with shedloads of cash and that other clubs found it hard to live with that. We built two league winning sides with the Moores cash and we were the biggest underachievers in English football during the 70s and early 80s given how powerful we were financially due to employing a groaning list of crap managers. That's our history. We've never in modern times been - as per Leahyfantasyland - a club that's stood aside to be 'happy' and let others sweep up the trophies. A completely bogus analysis of our history from a feller who's just out to exploit a connection.

I don't understand where this 'Plaything' comes from.

Roman Abramovich has spent close on a billion quid and will surpass this when he underwrites the new bridge, so it's hardly a plaything is it ?

Let's face it, we don't know what these rich men think, but I would imagine that none of them are stupid enough to pour billions into a club just for a bit of a giggle.

Whats the reason then? For a return on their investment?.....

Obviously not.

So why do these billionaires want to own a football club?

A few wish to rasie their profiles. A few see the vast amounts of money to be made if they are a success and a few just wish to strip the clubs of any assetts and bail leaving them in debt. The last is kinda what the current board are doing really.

A media platform to highlight themselves and their other enterprises? (pretty much what DIC were hot on Liverpool for); To give a high international profile to people looking for legitimacy? (Ambramovich, Shinawatra); Because they're genuine 'sports fans' (Lerner); To set out to exploit a club by using lveraged buyouts and place all the risk on the club itself if they dont pull in the revenue (G&H, Glaziers). Plenty of reasons. Maybe we can agree they're not all necessarily malign?

All going back to the same point though aren't they lads - a nice shiny plaything.

And Goat - I would seriously question the business acumen of any 'investor' who has the intention to make a return on their money....
