All going back to the same point though aren't they lads - a nice shiny plaything.

And Goat - I would seriously question the business acumen of any 'investor' who has the intention to make a return on their money....

No, they're not. A feller who has almost as many shares as Kenwright in the club, Robert Earl: is Everton his 'plaything' or is he using it to add to his portfolio of businesses, or because he wants to make a profit on his shares?

The situation you describe that you're trying to avoid is already with us.

Some of them must do it tho. I can only think thats what the RS owners are in it for and also the Glaziers. They arent doing it for the love of the game thats for sure. And surely thats what Earl and Woods intention is? Im gonna give Bill the benefit of the doubt.

But clearly Roman and the City owners arent looking for a return. I thought Dave put it better, with grouping them and naming them.

Clearly, so why do they?

Why has Abramovich and co effectively given away so much money? - money he'll never get back, no matter how much it raised his profile within football.

I have no idea. Maybe because at the time he had about 14bn so whats a little billion gonna matter.

Do you know? I suppose at the end we will find out. But at the moment hes spent £800m, hes won Trophys for Chelsea and hes vastly rasied their profile within the footballing world. From my point of view, hes only done good at the moment.

So I think its fair to assume that as theres no logical reason for Abramovich spending nearly £1 billion then Chelsea is effectively his plaything. Something he can show off to his friends. So back to Clarky...

I don't understand where this 'Plaything' comes from.

Roman Abramovich has spent close on a billion quid and will surpass this when he underwrites the new bridge, so it's hardly a plaything is it ?

so... what is it?

Its a plaything for me. Its not an investment. Its just his very own Football Manager Game. He had money to spend and he spent it. This is a man thats got about 3 huge yachts and 5 planes of different sizes. He spends money because he wants too.

He felt the pinch like we all have recently, so he curbed it a little. But I can see him spending a lot this Summer.

And anyone who purchases Everton will be expected to provide Moyes with at least £25/£30m every year and to do this they would effectively be throwing their own money away. So what would be the point? - what would they get out of it other than to have the status of owning a football club and having a real version of fantasy football?

 Who'd give a shiny one if that happened? We'd just be swapping a train set owner unable to afford more carriages for one who could buy Hornby.

Things aren't black and white though, you can't just say that every rich club owner is a show off who wants to brag that he owns a club.

So Manure is Glazier Snr's plaything ?

Here is a man who has absolutely no interest in Manure or english football.

I've only ever seen a Glazier once on telly, so they're hardly flashin the club around like a new Rolex are they ?

All these owners who "give" or "invest" in clubs arent underwriting loans with banks or "loaning" clubs money and heaping debt on the clubs books.

Looking at you Mr Learner and Roman.

*City it will be intresting to see there acconts a year in to "investment".

On a seprate note the club have confirmed they have sold 25.000 season tickets thus far (more then last season) with a month to go before Arsenal.

And we still await our first signing, its as if the money just dissappears.

GOT, to modify a point you made earlier, none of us know these people well enough to know what they have in mind when taking over a club so we shouldn't leap to conclusions or assume they all have the same motivation. it's also wrong to assume there's no money to be made from investing in football - do you anticipate kenwright will eventually sell at a loss?

Christ...

dave suggested the Kirkby thread be open so Kirkby natured threads (such as this to an extent), could be kept to one thread. I replied saying the membership voted against this suggestion.

So actually, you were wrong (y)

no, GOT, you mentioned kirkby first in this thread as far as i can see. maybe it was a freudian slip & you really, really want to re-open that kirkby thread, go on you know you do really! :D
