It also seems pertinent that the profile of the squad article matter of factly says that a few of the squad are gay, and no one really gives a toss, yet if members of the male squad came out the hoopla would be enormous.
It really shouldn't matter should it. In either 'product'. But it seems such a ridiculous issue within the men's game that it's become something that will likely define the first current PL player that openly comes out as gay/bi-sexual, regardless of ability.

I've enjoyed this tournament a lot. Good atmosphere around the games, competitive and played in good spirits. The England team seems likeable and capable. I hope it generates interest long term because I think it's clear that there is room enough for a men's and women's product to be successful.

I was at the track cycling at the Commonwealths yesterday and there was none of this silly "women aren't as good as men therefore their "product" is inferior" nonsense. Undoubtedly the biggest cheer of the day was for Laura Kenny, by some margin. It was just people riding their bikes really, really fast.

Someones found an angle to stir up some controversy. Its either someones being knocked down or a former victim on a path to redemption. Having a go for having a goes sake. What was it Fifa (yeah, virtuous fifa no less) said about a british world cup bid?

It's such a strange thought process that you should only watch sport if it's the pinnacle of performance, when there's so much more that draws interest to the activity.

Nobody watches Everton because it's the pinnacle of footballing performance, in the same way that the majority of football fans don't watch the sport routinely to see the 'best' teams play.

You might also question why anyone would be watching the commonwealth games, when it's an inferior product to the Olympics.

It's really just a cover for other things, isn't it?

Shame this has been sexualised and turned into a ‘thing’. Footballers whip off their tops after scoring important goals all the time. This one happened to be a woman, and she was wearing a sports bra, which probably covers up more flesh than some clothing worn in other sports. The real focus should be on any number of other things, such as why do women footballers not need to throw themselves to the floor every five minutes in pursuit of non-existent fouls; why can’t the men’s team win anything despite the vastly superior funding; why are Everton poo plops; why does toast always land buttered side down; etc. ?
Not sure it has been sexualised - otherwise it wouldn't be seen as empowering, surely.

You're right though- other sportswear can show more - nothing to see here and a great celebration of a great event.

The dives and cheating ARE coming into the women's game. A couple of times you heard the women ex-players and pundits describe a cheating act in some way as being professional. They're already casually normalising cheating. It'll come faster as more money is at stake.

Our mens team have won nothing fir a long while despite their vast finding because theyre up against other teams also with vast funding so its not really a valid comparison. I think the difference in funding between countries in the women's game is far more apparent. There are far fewer top international teams in the women's game.

did people get annoyed with the celebration at the time or did that happen after? very odd
Haven't noticed any annoyance with it. Just people talking about why it's a talking point mainly. And attention seeking women shouting "empowerment."

Don't think that's true in most cases tbh. There's a reason the PL gets more views than the Championship, which I'm sure gets more than L1 etc etc. Why Barcelona and Madrid get more than Espanol and Rayo Vallecano. Why F1 gets more than F2. Why International cricket and rugby get more than the national leagues. That Wimbledon gets more than Eastbourne and Queens and Nottingham. And I'm sure the Olympics gets many more views than the Commonwealth games. Boxing, rowing, nfl, basketball etc etc. People want to see their teams play, but aside from that (and cost/disenfranchisment) most people want to see the best teams/players.

I appreciate that. But the comparisons to the PL aren't really sensible because little in terms of football can compete with the PL in quality. Yet we have lots of people watching leagues all around the world.

Likewise, lots of people watch and attend football at all levels in England. But largely, the draw for the big clubs in football is the winning.

The WSL is not competition for the PL as things stand, but, I suspect the trajectory will be that it starts to become competition for L2, L1 sides if it starts to generate buzz.
