even after all that labour still arnt making any headway, looking more like a lost election already, starting to give up hope.

It's a particularly desperate man that stands on the side pointing out flaws in each and every thing that someone does. I don't see any pro-activity from coach. I don't see any suggestions for how other countries might be doing things well, or indeed pockets of excellence within our own country that can be spread more widely.

All I see is moan, moan, moan, moan. Absolutely the worst coach ever.

To be honest Bruce , the tories are running rings around Labour at the moment that was a decent performance by osborne from a tory veiwpiont, that stamp duty annoucement was better thought out than the mansion tax from Labour, even if you dont agree with the facts and figures of it he has Labour chasing his tail over that and health ect instead of setting the pace coming into the election.
THat fella they got from the USA to advise on the election looks to be a good investment for Labour dosnt he?

The thing is mate, I really can't be bothered with any of it. I spent all of yesterday listening to 15 teams from the NHS that had come up with innovative ways to make things better and were pitching to us for a bit of extra cash, support and exposure to take their ideas to the next step (either helping with implementation or disseminating them wider usually).

That's the kind of thing that interests me, and thankfully I come across examples like those every day through my work. The politicians are so often wide of the mark on things, especially around election time when they all start to grandstand.

I've been invited along to a thing this morning with Vince Cable where he'll be listening to some start-ups doing some cool things before being quizzed by anyone in attendance (including yours truly). That's more important than grandstanding and point scoring, isn't it? I think politicians forget that sometimes, and the tribal rhetoric by some of the electorate merely eggs them on.

As the saying goes, it's better to do the right thing wrong than the wrong thing right, and to me, an excellently run bit of electioneering falls very much into the latter camp.

Lads, in the context of a political thread, there will be some who wish to highlight future policy options and those who wish to critique previous policies of the Government of the day.

Each are equally valid contributions to a political discussion as often reference to the past puts in context future claims from our politicians.

The coming months will see politicians of all sides become increasingly aggressive and antagonistic towards each other particularly if the outcome remains as difficult to predict as polls currently suggest.

No reason though why GOT needs to descend to the level of politicians.....

I work for myself mate, zero hours and all that  There are people out there doing great stuff though, it is inspiring. You kind of expect the media to only report the bad news stories (one of the people pitching to us yesterday got harangued in the Mail recently for instance), but politicians should be above that. They should be above point scoring and snideyness. It's a long way from the philosopher kings of Plato.

Yes, fair point, I apologise for dropping my standards.

Except Bruce, and I hope you will agree with me, working for yourself is the exact opposite of zero hours.

Working for yourself, you determine what your rate of pay is, and critically how many hours you work. The only limitation is the quality of service and product you offer and your ability to sell those services.

Zero hour contracts remove your ability to determine your value and the amount of work you take on.

Aye, I was point scoring myself. My clients tend to determine my rate of pay though and I don't have any security in the way of guaranteed income or sick pay or any of the things that come with an employment contract.

The flipside is of course the freedom to work when and how you want, which is great. Suffice to say, there do appear some terrible employers out there that are doing some very bad things, I'm just not sure the zero hours label has been all that helpful as it risks throwing babies out with the bathwater.

Zero hour contracts are a scam to manipulate workers. "Internships" are an even bigger scandal (although I believe Monica Lewinski rather enjoyed hers).
However, as a self employed person, I end up shafting myself on a daily/weekly/monthly/yearly basis as I work stupid hours and take home virtually nothing other than to keep body & soul together.

Quite a good case in point I guess about how much politicians really know. Just got back from the thing with Vince Cable and I think the extent of his knowledge on the report his department published last week (that was the topic of my question to him) was what his press officer briefed him with about 30 seconds before my question to him.

Such is life and all that, but I think we have to be realistic with what changing the politicians will actually achieve.
