Anyone been watching BBC series Inside the Commons?

Difference between Labour and Conservative MP's like night and day, the likes of Rees Mogg etc is everything wrong with the current system. How on earth anyone can vote for a Victorian age throwback like that is beyond me, so out of touch with modern society it's untrue.

David Cameron once again outlined his plan for 'Youth Allowance' today, a £57 per week allowance for adults between the ages of 18-21. The young will be forced to undertake 30 hours/week community service in return for the allowance.

How much longer can this government continue to punish the unemployed? Instead of looking at he root cause, which of course is the lack of jobs and incredibly low degree to employment rate, this government continues to portray the victims as the problem.

To make young people perform community service (a punishment, lest we forgot, which is reserved for criminals) in return for a small amount of 'allowance' is purely degrading.

Once again, the blame of the public is diverted towards the effect, not the cause.

*edit* the report I read reported that youths will receive the allowance for 6 months before being forced into community service, however, it has been announced that community service will start from the first week of signing on.
I am in no way equating Conservative policy towards youth employment with the policy in Germany in the 1930's but have a look at this newspaper article.Written in 1933,and highlighting policies undertaken in Wales and Germany.

You could say the same about Dennis Skinner if you supported a different party ......

I think it's an excellent series but by God they need to put some of the traditions to one side and I am being to wonder what is the point of the House of Commons chamber itself when the real work is in committee and all the chamber does is allows all the MPs to act like schoolboys with too much sugar inside them.

SHAME, BOO

Last week's episode was especially ridiculous, showing a group of Beefeaters kitted out in full costume, tapping their feet in unison in the bowels of the House of Commons, searching for gunpowder : November 5th - gunpowder, treason and plot.

Nobody could see it except two or three people looking on from doorways. It was farcical, but because it was 'tradition' the facile nonsense is accepted.
I say bring back the ducking stool - it's sorely needed in that carnival of fools.

The link above states it was VOLUNTARY FREE LABOUR - this will be enforced if training course are not taken up - what happens when they end , and there is no job at the end of it - litter picking derogatory jobs or working along side some other employee who is getting paid the minimum wage?
The Tories lost their case on the Pound stretcher incident will they ever learn as they lost that one in the courts - this is political tory dogma for the election that the EU will ban if implemented!
I class picking litter out of a park, I do not class that as a highly motivating advance in a teenager, our prisoners have it easier than that!
Workfare via the back door - what happened to the minimum wage with this workfare Tory project? - it's the thin end of the wedge all the unemployed will soon have to work for their benefit in jobs they have butchered with council cut backs!
The nasty party raises its ugly head yet again oh by the way youth unemployment is up yet they boast millions of new apprentices probably without jobs at the end of them!
Yes we are all in it together!
Thank goodness I am retired , but in general I feel sorry for any average youngster in the UK at the moment who has not got the talents or funds to go to University!

The whole building needs making into a museum for visitors, and build a new House of Parliament for the 21st century,it is falling down, and the antiquated procedures need modifying into the 21st Century with an elected upper house too!

Mate he is not the only one, there are literally dozens of them but they are there because people voted for them.

Interesting idea (I've read a synopsis of their proposals rather than watch that 2hr long video) and I find myself thinking it would be a good idea but I doubt it would do a great deal to arrest the alarming and ever-increasing polarisiation of society in terms of income and wealth.

I'm reading this at the moment:

Sadly, it's almost as depressing as it is illuminating. Essential reading, though.

I'll have to add that to my reading list. There has been quite a bit of discussion in the past few years about how changes in the economy will impact jobs, whether it's online platforms favouring a few superstars over the majority or the rise of technologies such as 3D printing or driverless cars.

One thing there doesn't appear to be is a consensus, and it seems to be falling into almost familiar Malthusian patterns, with optimists suggesting that mankind will adapt to this change as they have to most other ones over the years, whereas pessimists suggest that this one is very different and more far reaching than previous ones.

I don't suppose anyone really knows for sure, but it seems prudent to be aware of what's happening and how it might impact upon your livelihood. As with most of these kind of things, having the ability to adapt is a distinct advantage.
