And today's topic of conversation will be.......
The pros and cons of 'Right to buy'

One of the biggest Cons is that ever more land is being taken to build on (& not just houses but the useless HS2 for example) thereby diminishing the available land to grow food on .. which is fine in a stable world but when UK is only 60% or so self sufficient (and declining), potentially is a worrying trend.

There was a study reviewed in the Economist a couple of weeks back that I meant to post up but forgot. It was comparing inequality in Britain and Sweden, and suggested a part of the reason why it's larger here is because our employers tend to be larger (ie more employees) than their Swedish counterparts. Can dig it out if you're interested.

"Part" of the reason, perhaps. That suggests there are other reasons, too. I wonder what they could be. And anyway, it is no justification.

Of course, it would only be part of the reason, as I'm sure there are multiple factors involved.

They had another piece on inequality in this weeks issue that reviewed this paper http://www.brookings.edu/about/projects/bpea/papers/2015/land-prices-evolution-capitals-share

You'd almost be forgiven for thinking that it's only those in social housing that have any trouble getting onto the housing ladder. Those who try and do the right thing seem to get forgotten about yet again.

Only a fool would deny the need for social housing. Thus the answer would seem to be - build more houses for sale and keep the vital social housing so that LAs can react to the needs of their communities.

Who said ashamed?.....it's a bit like in Scotland where when confronted by Scot Nats people just agreed with them to get rid........It's an interesting thought.........
it is an interesting thought, I'd say that attitude is also apparent on Twitter, you rarely see people admitting they are Tory voters.

Social media is socialist (the clue is in the name). It has the feel of being run for the people by the people. The Tories continue to be associated with the establishment, and are thus seen as the enemy for social media. That's how I see it anyway.

Ideologically it's severely flawed imo. So many reasons why people genuinely have need for a spare bedroom.
Can you give me an example? If you're suggesting things like 'kid away at uni', then perhaps the kid should get a part time job and pay the bill for what it's effectively their room, not their parents.

I fail to see a reason why anyone in social housing should be able to have a house larger than their needs. It's not their house. They should be forced to vacate when it is no longer suitable to their needs.

Oh it was the state's fault! You're a card, Bruce.

Try not to be so polemic mate :) Do you think the lessons have been learned from the crash?

It's a tricky one isn't it? If you went by social media pre the last US election you'd have been sure that Ron Paul would win as the support he had online was enormous, yet come polling day that support didn't really seem to count for much.

For what it's worth though, I'd say the web as a whole is much more anarchic than socialist.

Right to buy....not been introduced all the years they've been in power......but just as it's looking like a defeat for their next term.....corrupt bribing [Poor language removed]

I guess you can judge support for any party based on social media proclamations.
